The wording of the thread title is misleading (not purposely - I think it just came out that way - the OP explained more later).

It looks like it’s the automatic admits that are limited to the top 7% with the exception that this comprises only 75% of the slots and the remaining 25% don’t necessarily need to meet that criteria. From the article -

Yea, the title is only a bit off. I know people who were at 8.1% with excellent test scores and great ECs that were not admitted. The other 25%: I don’t know who makes up this demographic! In 2010, 4.2% undergrads were international students. Perhaps there are some ASTRONOMICAL test score students whose schools don’t rank or something - I don’t know. But I know it’s VERY difficult to get in if you don’t make that percentage.

I think anyone to whom this applies knows exactly what I meant. ;)

cromette, my ds1 was part of that other 25% in 2010. URM at a competitive school ranked just outside the top 25%. But he had excellent SAT scores (2200+), was an Eagle Scout, four-year varsity athlete, etc. He’s exactly what UT was looking for – an academically capable, in-state URM.

Ds1 got in at both UT and A&M but didn’t go to either. Ds2 has been accepted at A&M and isn’t applying to UT, at least as of now. Remains to be seen where he will land!

Cromette - got a question about your 1300SAT (over 600 each in M and CR) comment. My D has over 600 in each of those, but not 1300 total. I assume she is NOT an automatic admit, but stands a good chance of being one of the holistic admits at A&M?

Edited to add - it just hit me that your comment refered to needing at least 600 on each, but the total still needed to be 1300+

My girls (who go/went to an barely above state average high school) were all auto admits to both schools. They didn’t have to deal with the ranking problems that a lot of the parents I see here struggle with.

@2TxAgs - I would think so. It would depend of course on what the holistic picture looks like: Class rank, Caliber of high school, Rigor of study, EC’s, volunteer work, etc. But yea, I would think she has a decent shot. If not directly, then through Blinn Team, which is REALLY COOL. How much did she miss the 1300 by, and is the rest of the resume strong? You should go over to the A&M board, if you haven’t already and let some people over there chance her - list her stats, etc.

I don’t know the percentage, but there are certainly some very high performing private schools in Texas which do not rank their graduates. These kids make very high scores, and some do apply to and get accepted at UT and A & M.

Cromette - would love to hear more about Blinn TEAM. She’s got a 1240 SAT, 7AP classes, 4 yr varsity athlete, top 12% (missed 10% by 11 kids). I think she’s got a great chance, but she understood them to say at the tour that non automatic admit kids wouldn’t find out until March. I THINK via the website that March is the latest someone might hear, but not that all holistic admits don’t know their status until March.

Re: the A&M board - when I’ve looked before I didn’t see much activity - I’ll have to check again.

2Tx, ds1 was not an academic admit (not top 25% but his SATs were strong) but found out in October, I believe. That may have changed since 2010.

No, some review admits are finding out now. I think it’s more appropriate to say they MAY not find out until MAY.

Sounds like she has a good shot to me. Did she take the writing portion?

Blinn Team is cool because you are still treated like an Aggie! You attend one class a semester at A&M, and the rest at Blinn, and if you satisfactorily complete the two year program, you are GUARANTEED admittance to A&M - but you CAN transfer sooner if you qualify.

You can join the Corp, you can live on A&M campus, get a meal plan on campus, transportation between campuses is provided, you can use the recreation facilities and participate in all campus organizations and activities. Like I said, it’s cool.

Wow…I just got off the phone and was told ‘end of March or early April’ for hearing back on holistic reviews. I wonder if the really early kids (you could start applying in August) heard back already, but the late comers have to wait? That is crummy, because we have to make a sports-related commitment/decision in February and were hoping that we’d know before then.

Now I don’t know whether to encourage her to stay with it or let the Ags go by the wayside…

Tough one. I would assume what they’re telling you is probably right. Admissions gave me accurate information every time. Really, you should head over to the A&M board, because there are review admits over there who can tell you when they submitted their information and how long it took. I think someone said a month for the whole process, which is not too bad.

2TxAgs- We know a couple of kids that were review admits last year, both found out in late Feb/early march… They had both applied by mid October, one got full admitance, one got the gateway programe, the other was offered PSA and ended up at Blinn. From what I remember from last years boards, is that kids that applied early and were close to academic admit stats found out sooner.
