My son has graduated from a private school but it was the same back then. He was flooded with letters from other schools, even a phone call from Harvard. Did we hear from UT? Nope. They are trying to do a better job of recruiting top students, but mostly by offering the lottery scholarship. The state can’t seem to manage that. They have been using the money to fund capital projects for K-12, and preschool. And are now saying they are in danger of running out of money. When we voted for the lottery scholarships, it was intended to be for college only.

South Carolina also offers better merit scholarships to Tennessee students.

I do believe they still are sending out a few letters for the Chancellor’s Scholarships. They send you a letter and tell you that you will not receive one of the scholarships as well.

Why should UT offer so much merit aid when the Hope Scholarship is available? There are a large amount of scholarships available to in-state students to begin with. Last I checked, not every state gives everyone who makes a 21 on the ACT $4K for college every year. UT also offers a substantial amount to low-income students, so that also has to be taken into account. They merely seem to have other goals than basing things off merit. Yes, having plenty of merit money is a great thing, but when giving money to other things, there has to be a loss in some area. Also, I don’t really think they feel a huge need to advertise. They get plenty of applications. Two of the more well known schools in Tennessee are Vanderbilt(of course) and UTK. Every single good student at my school is most likely planning on going to UTK or at least applying there.

Also, I wish that UTK sent out other scholarships sooner. I would like to know if I’ll receive the Pledge Scholarship, but won’t know until March or later. I would like to apply for housing now, but can’t until I know that I’ll receive money to pay for it…

We’re in the boat. Son got tons of letters from many colleges and great scholarship offers. Nothing from our flagship university until recently… UTK is offering a whooping $2,500! He’s so down on it that he told me that he is scratching UTK out of his list.

He will end up OOS and will be paying a lot less…

got accepted a few days ago!
i still have to go there for a visit, i’m just wondering about the atmosphere? i’ve never been south of maryland and i’m not for stereotypes and i know racism is everywhere, but are racial attitudes in the south really the way the stereotype portrays them? its something i’m a little worried about being a black female…and apparently east tennessee isn’t as diverse as mid/west TN

Well, I’m a black female and I’m in my second semester at UT. I haven’t experienced any blatant racism, but there isn’t a lot of diversity. I’ve been in a couple of classes where I’m the only black person there. I’m one of only 5 or 6 black people on the honors floors in Morrill.

Most people that I know that have attended UTK haven’t seen that much diversity either. But I suppose it might just be the area. I mean, at my school, there are actually a very low percentage of people who aren’t Caucasian.

But even back when my aunt attended(10-15 years ago, I suppose), she didn’t notice that much racism. It’s college though, you’ll have the rude people, but there are so many to make up for the idiots that it shouldn’t/wouldn’t be as noticeable.

The Hope Scholarship with the GAM scholarship totals $5000. The Volunteer Scholarship is $2500. If you put down a major, your scholarship application was forwarded to that dept. They are reviewing those applications now to select candidates for departmental scholarships. All scholarships are stackable, unlike many other colleges. So you can continue to apply for outside scholarships without concern that they might replace the scholarships you already have.
Only 1% of honors scholarship applicants received an offer of the Chancellor’s honors scholarship. The average GPA of admissions for next year had a GPA of 3.8. It has become more selective because of the amount of applications from very qualified students.
You may think that another school that gives you out-of-state tuition is equal in price, but be sure and check the room & board costs, other costs of attendance, and if you still have to pay their in-state tuition. Some private schools reduce your scholarship or financial aid by the amount of any outside scholarships you earn. UT does not do this.

My daughter had a black female roommate one year in Andy Holt. They got along very well. Alot of the football and basketball players are black, and my daughter’s roommate knew many of them and had a good experience at UT.

As I am a parent, I do not know how much departmental scholarships are. I have been told that engineering has the most and that some departments may not have any. The one that I’ve seen in engineering was $800 to $1200 Freshman year, and went up a little each year. You may be mailed another application to fill out.
If you put undecided in your major, you will not get a departmental scholarship.

The IS vs OOS financial aid situation isn’t unique to Tennessee. We live in NC, S has been accepted to UNC and has received no aid from them. Neither have several of his friends. However, most of them have substantial scholarships from good schools in other states. Go figure…
