I am between UT Knox (instate) vs. Purdue (out of state). I want to major in engineering. First off, how hard would it be to major in engineering? I like everything engineering offers such as group work to building something. However, I took ap physics 1, got an A but thought the tests to be very hard. I got a 2 on the exam. With all that said, I understand that Purdue is a top 10 engineering program. I have seen UTK ranked around the 60s nationally. So pros and cons:
UTK: I have people I know going there, I can room with a friend, I have cousins down there, but its not as good as Purdue and I kind of want to go out of state to start fresh. (not as important tho). How valuable is a UTK engineering degree?
Purdue: Prestigious, easy to get a job after, but when I visited, I noticed a lot of asians. I am asian but I’m not the super smart ones. The asians I met at Purdue were usually international and very smart (nothing against them) but I never got a long with the asians at my school. Also, how hard is it to graduate from Purdue especially with an engineering degree?
Thanks
Did you look at Tennessee Tech? My cousin is in Chem-E there and loves it. As I understand it, UT-K is very solid in certain engineering disciplines (Computer Engineering comes to mind - different cousin was in that at UT-K) and Tennessee Tech is better in others.
Personally I would not pay the premium for Purdue if you can make UT-Knoxville work, and get excellent grades.
Purdue is a great school, no doubt, especially for engineering. I’m just not sure it’s worth it when you have good ABET-accredited options in state.
Aight thanks for your response. My parents are willing to pay the oos tuition because they believe it is easier to find a good job and make that money back. How big of a difference is a purdue degree vs utk degree in engineering? Also how hard is it to actually graduate from purdue engineering? I have a 4.33 weighted 29 comp act. I make good grades but i got a 2 on ap physics 1 exam so idk if thats my best subject
I dont really do good on any ap exams but i did find trouble in physics even tho i got an A. If i go to purdue, would i be ok or would i be behind? Since i expect the smart kids to already fully understand physics
bump, is it better to get graduate with a’s and b’s at ute or b’s and c’s at Purdue? Also, uga is a better school than its but utk is ranked higher in engineering. which would be better?
There is not a huge difference between a Purdue degree versus a UTK degree. Graduates apply for the same jobs and earn about the same money. Don’t think a Purdue degree means you’re earn enough extra money make up for the OOS tuition, at least not in the first 10 years or so.
It’s better to get A’s and B’s at UTK than B’s and C’s at Purdue or any other school.
As I said in another thread, UTK is much better for engineering than UGA. Many of UTK engineering majors are not even offered at UGA.(like Aerospace, Nuclear, Industrial, etc.).
