UVA Class of 2022 RD decisions

does UVA mail out rejection letters? or is it only acceptance letter to be expected in the mail

@luvsml good luck. Why did he choose to do UVA RD instead of EA if that was his first choice? I know that they say it does not make a difference, but if that was his top choice, why not apply early??

So what programs did folks apply to?

School of Arts and Sciences with an interest in blending digital art and computer science into animation and game design program. The Arts and Sciences comp sci program is designed to be interdisciplinary so seems like a good fit.

School of Engineering. Prospective Major: aerospace engineering

LUVSML - what a insulting post. The strategy of hedging bets because of the “white boy” card is a tired one and often seen as a thinly veiled reminder of the inherent racism and culture of victimization that permeates our social tapestry. Your son is from Virginia, his odds are much higher than the OOS kids trying to get in. Academic requirements for VA residents are significantly lower than those for OOS kids regardless of their race. If UVA was his top choice he should have tried EA.

@LvMyKids2 - poor advice on my part, I think to not apply EA to UVA. I wish now that I had encouraged him to apply early. Originally his first choice was Virginia Tech engineering and he applied there ED and was deferred. I thought having his first semester grades under his belt might help with UVA. I encouraged him to apply EA to all of the other schools so that he would know his options and to receive merit scholarships OOS. He has been offered a lot of really good merit scholarships to OOS schools. He was admitted to VT but not to engineering so not going there… VT accepted less than 15% of applicants to engineering and only 19% of overall applicants - crazy competitive this year! He was also admitted to Maryland (#15 comp science ranking) and Purdue but still waiting to hear on scholarship money. He applied to the College of Arts & Sciences at UVA rather than the engineering school since he wants to major in computer science and they offer a degree through the math department. Thought that would help his chances of admittance. We will see…we would be thrilled for him to go to UVA! We even drove up to NYC a couple of weeks ago to catch the ACC basketball championship game and UVA win! It was a great ending to the season (we’ll forget about the NCAA tournament :wink: )

@bankdaddy @luvsml I don’t think either post is fully consistent with UVA admissions data. It is harder for OOS kids to get admitted but not because academic standards are lower for IS. There are just a lot more OOS applicants for relatively fewer slots. Last year, of tne 36k applicants, 25k were OOS applying to a school that maintains a population that is 2/3 IS. 70% of applicants being OOS to a schools whose population is 66% IS means tough math for OOS applicants. As for the white kid from NOVA thing, UVA admit data shows that poulation gets admitted at about the same rate as the general poulation.

@PhilipM Hear! Hear!

@luvsml im still waiting to hear WHY if UVA was his first choice he did not apply EA?

The blog says tomorrow, 3/22, at 6pm!

Is it eastern time?

I have a question. Does in state people who got deferred EA have higher acceptance rate than people who got deferred OS?

@Geneeeee0203 Yes, because UVA must give priority to its In-State Students due to its status as a public university

yes @Hiddle it’s Eastern time, since UVA is on the East Coast

@savagestudent7 yesss Thank you!

@collegehopefull12345678 Thank you! :slight_smile:

@PhilipM your mj sounds very interesting
My D applied to the school of nursing
Got deferred from EA
Very competitive, as they only accept about 70 students -
Best of luck to all
Go Hoos!!

@fall2018 Good luck to your D. Honestly, I am on a streak of two consecutive waitlists – Northeastern and Wellesley – so not feeling all that optimistic today. But I am in Virginia Tech and VCUArts, both of which have good art/animation options so all will be good regardless.

Good luck everybody.

@LvMyKids2 – I gave bad advice to my son (along with his counselor) about applying EA to UVA and I wish now that I had advised him to apply EA, especially if it might have improved his chances for admittance. Originally, his first choice school was VT engineering. He applied ED and was deferred but now accepted. I thought it would help his chances at UVA to wait for his first semester grades. He was accepted EA to JMU, George Mason, Penn State, Purdue, Maryland, Ohio State, Arizona State, WVU, and South Carolina and offered good merit scholarships at all OOS schools (except still waiting to hear from Maryland and Penn State.) He was encouraged by his counselor to apply early to out of state schools for scholarships. @bankdaddy – Sorry, not sure what to say. I certainly didn’t mean to offend or insult in any way but, whether real or perceived, most people in Northern VA feel it is more competitive (being from here rather than other parts of the state) to get into UVA. We love UVA, my kids have been dressed in UVA gear since they were born and we just drove up to NYC a couple of weeks ago to see the UVA basketball team’s ACC tournament win (real shame though about the NCAA loss.)

yeah Northeastern was brutal or more like schizophrenic in their admission profile this year- many super high achievers rejected or waitlisted and many middle of the road people accepted - I guess they have a profile in mind so who are we to judge, but its a shame that people who worked hard for good grades/SATs are being overlooked or tossed out by some algorithm calculating likeliness of attendance
