If you applied to UVA Early Action and have an interview for the Jefferson Scholar award, are you automatically accepted to UVA?

No. The UVa Office of Admissions and the Jefferson Scholars Foundation are two separate entities. There is a misnomer out there that because you are nominated/interviewed for the Jefferson you are ‘in’ at UVa this is not the case.

So what if you get rejected from UVA in January but you move on for the Jefferson Scholar. Would you be automatically kicked out of the Jefferson Scholar running?

Yes.

I have a feeling that has probably never happened.

When we toured UVa,three years ago, an admissions rep told me that JeffersonScholar nominees are admitted and decisions have been changed when a nominee was rejected.

Actually I read on CC that several years ago, someone was invited to the finals weekend for Jefferson but wasn’t accepted to UVA. Somehow, it was fixed and the student quickly received their acceptance.

A school can only nominate one student, which in essence says this is our best student. That should carry some weight. However, because the selection is done by separate offices, there can be different decisions.

Our high school had two candidates go to the local interview last year. I would say the high school selects the best student(s) who is interested in the scholarship and attending UVA.

The packet given to guidance counselors states that when selecting their high school’s nominee, they should only consider merit, not whether the student is interested in UVA. Whether that actually happens in practice is another story.
