When is it coming out EA??
Anyone know when EA decisions will be released?
last year ea decisions came out late janurary so i expect then for this year.
Will UVA announce the release date and time ahead of time, or will they surprise us??
In past years, Dean J would post it on her blog the day of
@momofthree55 thank you for the info, good to know. I wish UVA would give us more notice of the date and time like some of the other schools do. But then I also wish their EA decisions came out earlier… End of January puts UVA a full 5-6 weeks later than most other schools’ EA. Wonder why they choose to do it this way.
@thing3 So all the people accepted ED at other schools can be removed from consideration, resulting in a higher yield.
I would LOVE to release decisions in December. The last time we were able to do that, we had 2,500 applications (we had Early Decision back then).
We don’t choose late January. The process requires it. We are a small staff compared to our peers with similar application numbers (20 full-time staff plus some part-time readers). The only way to have decisions in six weeks on 25,000 applications would be to limit the number of files we read. I’m really not comfortable with using GPA or testing cut offs for reasons I share on my blog. I hope that makes sense.
FWIW, I’ve never felt any pressure to hit a certain yield rate in my 13 years at UVA. Not saying there aren’t people who are interested in that number, just that I’ve never heard a directive that we need to get to a certain number.
We are not dawdling to manipulate the pool. We’re pulling long hours to get this process done. I’m just taking a little break (at 9:40 PM on a Friday night) to see what’s happening on the internet before going back to my files.
Thank you so much Dean J for your response. As much as we would love to see EA decisions in December, we appreciate the personal attention your staff pays to each application. Nobody wants the kids to be reduced to mere numbers. We’d rather wait!
Thank you Dean J for all you do!
Your response regarding GPA is 100% so true and wish, more people will NOT post GPA and ask questions about their chances. I see so many people replying that the GPA was low etc…I have to jump in and say comparing GPA is a joke! There was a post not so long ago in another thread from a poster who had an unweighted GPA of 4.0 and that person mentioned that his/her rank was 41 out of around 500 students …assuming that there were 9 more students with UW GPA 4.0 - we are talking about 10% of the graduating seniors with GPA 4.0! If this is NOT the case of grade inflation, nothing else is!!
Our son goes to one of the Top Public/charter/magnet school in the country (less than 70 students in the graduating class)–you get in by taking a test and interview in the 8th grade - to make sure that you can withstand the rigor. Also, the valedictorian UWGPA is 3,92!
I am Very Very Glad to see Dean J - talking about context! Sadly, here in TX, they go blindly by class rank? What is happening - Top 6 kids (top 10%) of the class go to Ivies, Stanford, U of Chicago, Berkeley, and other top schools and the kids outside the Top 6% cannot get in to top programs…There are 3/4 schools in the are I live that are in the Top 50 schools in the country (all of them have fewer students than a typical high school). .
I am glad that University of Virginia does NOT have such quotas! Yes, our son will be applying to Univ. of Virginia for RD! Only issue, if things go well, we have to pay a lot more since we are OOS!
And I assume UVA doesn’t announce the date of EA release (other than “by January 31) ahead of time is that they themselves don’t know exactly when they’ll be finished reading files. 25,000 applications sounds daunting…
Congrats to UVA McIntire for moving up the P&Q rank --just behind Wharton!
So I go to a very competitive NYC public high school, one that you have to have about a 94+ average in middle school to get into. This leads to my entire grade having extremely high grades. So compared to the rest of my grade my average is very low, will colleges like UVA know this?
I don’t know about your high school, but many schools send a school profile showing classes offered, number of APs taken, and SAT/ACT scores, also most schools just estimate how competitive a school is based on prior applicants so if all of the people from your school who have applied have had very high stats, yours in comparison might look lower. Good luck to you, but also remember that your grades coming from a competitive high school will be looked at more favorably than someone with the same grades at a lower tier high school.
What have graduating classes prior to yours done with respect to UVA admissions? Whether this is through Navian e or word of mouth you should be able to get an idea as to where you stand coming from your school
Cannot help but commenting … was in your shoes last year with my oldest daughter (who is now a college freshman … so have no fear - your child will get in somewhere!). The late January wait for UVA EA decisions is worth the wait and depending on where else you applied they really aren’t that late (it’s the RD decisions in late March that are killer!) Everyone here likes to post stats and ask Chance Me but honestly unless you are privy to all the other applicants your child can be perfect in everything and still not get in - it’s holistic and they decide based on designing a well-rounded class. My daughter (who of course I think is amazing!) got into schools that others who ranked ahead of her (stats were better) did not get into, yet got wait-listed/denied at 2 schools who took kids with lower stats than her. It all worked out for the best!
My best advice is to come back from winter break and just live in the moment of having your child at home because regardless of where they end up they are leaving you in T-minus 8 months and counting … make goofy family memories, invite all their friends over for no reason, take random pictures (not the prom posed kind but just sitting on the couch with the dog in sweats), start cleaning out their closets (if they haven’t worn it since sophomore year they will not be wearing it!), just enjoy these last months because THAT is what we were not truly prepared for … the process was nerve racking but the leaving… it’s harder than you can imagine. My daughter isn’t at UVA (had to follow the money offered at another school) but still hopes to maybe be there for Grad School in 3 1/2 years! Best of Luck to All!
Well said Askmother.Totally agreed with you and hope your dd is enjoying her school.
@jake12345 I have wondered the same thing. The answer I have heard is that they SHOULD know, because of the school profile they typically receive with your transcript.
However, something is slightly off because what I don’t understand is if UVA’s approach is holistic, how do they end up with 90% of students in the top 10% of their class and 97% in the top 20%?
It seems that there would be many great candidates (especially from high performing high schools) who fall outside 0-20% rank. If UVA isn’t putting a lot of weight on rank and/or imposing a firm line in the sand for rank, how would they end up with such numbers?
A student could be only top 25% rank with 1400 SAT and 4.25 GPA in advanced classes, but be top 5% at another high school.
And another student could be top 10% rank, but with 1200 SAT and 3.9 GPA that would be only top 40% elsewhere.
“However, something is slightly off because what I don’t understand is if UVA’s approach is holistic, how do they end up with 90% of students in the top 10% of their class and 97% in the top 20%?”
UVA’s numbers for those in the top x% of the class are for schools that rank. MANY schools, like my S19 and D17’s large public school, do NOT rank.
OP is and OOS applicant, so it is more difficult to gain acceptance to UVA overall. That being said, UVA will be familiar with the HS based on history with students from that school and the school profile.
We just got some last minute document requests for Financial aid (idoc) We had already done css, Fasfa etc and were all green until a few days ago. We have submitted the docs but am concerned that this might push our D19 into the RD pool for acceptance rather than EA which would stink and make me a little mad. Does anyone know if this is the case?
