Hey,
I attended UVA sober. The clubs I did were anime club (CAINE), a religious club, worked, lived in Brown College, sang in 2 choirs (one religious one through CVille). I loved UVA. What is your living situation this year? You may have just been living with people you don’t have common interests with. I am still subscribed to Hoos Sober lol. I don’t get on here a lot but feel free to PM me and I will give you contact info through reddit or something I am on more.
Collegemom: Yes, UVa students apply to the Comm School during their 2nd year, after completing prerequisites.
Did you try Stevens Institute of Technology? - It is a “small” Engineering school.
Hi, Collegemomjam:
Sorry I missed your question! I’ve become more lax about checking College Confidential now that my sons are First Years and my daughter is just a high school freshman. As the helpful poster above noted, you don’t apply to the Commerce School until your Second Year. But there are certain Commerce school clubs that undergraduates can join, and my son who is considering applying to McIntire was looking into joining those. Honestly, if I had to guess, I think both of my kids might well end up at Batten. I went to UVA’s Law School and I’m familiar with the Batten program and faculty, and I’m guessing it will win them over. But, honestly, I’m good with anything. (Jim Henson made quite a career out of puppetry out of The University of Maryland, after all…)
My guys are really happy at UVA thus far, but I have to say that I think they would have adapted well to a number of schools, so try not to let the college search drive you (and your junior) too nuts. I think my guys would have likewise had a great time at William & Mary, Penn State, Villanova, or The University of Minnesota, which were all options. Another key to how well they are adjusting – which was definitely not a given – was that they both chose to room with people they knew well from high school. So everyone is considerate about sleeping and studying, and one roommate tends to drag the other three guys to social and academic events and activities. And they force each other to leave the dorms get out to the dumpling food truck, the Barracks Road shopping center, the spikeball tournament, a movie on the downtown mall, etc. Otherwise, I think natural slothfulness might kick in. Ramen is easy and tasty after all!
Good luck again! Feel free to contact me if you have any other UVA questions.
2kids: My son graduated from Batten and really liked the program, and the ease at registering for classes. He has a good job with a federal agency. However, at first he tried interviewing with a set of consulting firms on-grounds, and found out that they only wanted to talk to Comm School students.
Hi @2kidstocollege18 thanks for that great info! It’s funny you mention that your boys chose roommates that they knew. I have two daughters in college that that would NOT have worked for, but I have been thinking that would work for my son, and he does have a good friend who is looking at some of the same schools. If they end up together (long shot) I bet they would live together. Thanks again.
I think you will fit in better at a Tech school. We toured UVa and got a bad feeling about much of what you do not like.(we took the engineering tour and our guides reason for attending UVa was he wanted people to be impressed with where he got his degree) Schools such as VaTech, NCSU, GT and Clemson will have a lower percentage of students in greek life, more kids in engineering and science equates to more devoted to studying and less of the party atmosphere. Yes, there will be drinking at all, but more late night study sessions as well. I think if you check, these schools will also have excellent reputation for getting into medical school.
Good Luck
This thread is from July. It’s safe to say the student is not coming back to this forum to comment further.
@jllmtw Clemson has a very active Greek life. And FYI, engineering and science students also party.
