Uva oos vs Emory vs Tulane honors vs Northeastern honors

Hi everyone! I know I have quite the selection of schools, but I am very indecisive when it comes to what college decision I am about to make. I have been accepted to all of these schools, as well as Tulane and Northeastern’s honors programs. I am very interested in human biology & health, and I would like to major in public health or health studies at the school I ultimately choose. As I would like to either go pre-med or to grad school for health policy and work internationally, I am thinking about majoring in a language or international/ global studies as well. I would like opinions on which school is the best for me interests, as well as which would provide me with the best internships & things to do in general as I would like to be in a very lively environment. I would also like to note that I come from a middle-class background and have a sister going to college as well, so my family is not made of money. UVA is my most expensive school at 50k a year, tulane and emory are 40k a year, while northeastern is about 33k. Thanks!

I would also like to note that social life & partying is important to me as I really want to have a lot of fun, but so is academics (obviously) and I still would like that to be my main focus, but not my entire world!

To me, it sounds like Northeastern is by far the best fit and even the best value as well given the price. You’ve got a big city with lots to do in Boston, as well as it being a huge medical hub. Northeastern’s co-op program has many connections with all of the local hospitals and other medical industries in the area. It’s got a decent social scene but isn’t a huge party hub. Co-op’s can also be international, and there are lots of various study abroad opportunities. There’s the nice perk of the honors program too (mainly housing).

All of the schools will offer what you need academically and are pretty much peers there. When it comes to the environment, you’ve described Northeastern pretty spot on :slight_smile:

Thank you so much for responding! I’ll admit, I visited northeastern for the honors weekend recently and i absolutely loved the co-op program and honors dorms! Boston also seems like a great city to get involved in, and all of the local hospitals that i could work with was a dream come true! I’m mainly just concerned with the winter up in Boston as I am a huge fan of warm weather and the social scene concerning people coming & going due to co-ops.

There’s no way to sugar-coat the weather - I came from FL and was just fine, but it depends on the person. One benefit of NEU is that you’ll likely take summer classes at some point with co-op schedules, so you get to see Boston in a nice warm time in addition to the cold and snow.

The social effect of co-op are there, but a few things to consider:

  • No one goes on co-op until 4th semester at least, so you have 3 full semesters to make plenty of friends
  • Many co-op in Boston and will still be around socially, especially for first co-ops. That moves that first consecutive period of people being on campus from 3-4 semesters to 5-6 semesters.
  • If you do leave for co-op, there are likely other Northeastern students in your city and often in your company. One of my good friends is in SF right now and made some very good friends at Northeastern while there. I’m currently in LA actually and going to an art museum with others here (school sponsored event) in a week or two. Also, this comes with the added bonus of nice California winters. I haven’t seen snow in over a year now :stuck_out_tongue:

Note: For reference, I’m in my third year. This semester is the first any of my close friends have not been in the same city as me.

Wow that’s really nice that northeastern students can still interact with eachother while on co-op, I didn’t know that. I really can’t get over how amazing the co-op program is, I might just have to put up with the cold for it! Maybe I’ll end up in California avoiding the snow on one of my co-ops too haha! Thanks so much for the help!

@MaddieMcG Where did you choose?
