Neuroscience at Tulane or Northeastern

I have been accepted into the honors programs at both Tulane and Northeastern, and am struggling immensely with my decision.

I have received substantial financial aid from both, so the playing field is level there.

I know neuroscience is a more established major at Tulane, and I think I would have more research opportunities there, but the co-op program at Northeastern is also very good.

I love the location of Boston, but I am worried that Northeastern won’t be enough of a challenge, and that my co-op won’t be as beneficial since I’m in a fairly limited major.

I live in the Midwest so I am slightly worried about humidity at Tulane, but I really want to experience new culture, which is why i’m looking for a city.

My first priority is my education, so I want to choose the school with the best educational opportunities so I can get into med school. Anyone who has been through either school and has input on why they chose that school or how their experience was I would really appreciate it.

Well, congratulations! You have been accepted to two great schools! Here is a discussion on this topic. It is about a year old, but I thin still pertinent to your decision: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/19265241#Comment_19265241. Best of luck!

I can’t speak to the neuroscience major specifically, but I’m surprised that you think that Northeastern might not be a challenge. I would expect it to be a more rigorous program than Tulane.

Boston is one of the world’s top medical hubs so if you’re interested in the medical field, I would think Boston would be the clear choice.

I would look at the two programs in detail and see how they jive with what you are interested in, and also consider how well you like the respective environments, meaning student body, campus feel, and the surrounding area. There is no substitute for detail. The good news is: you can’t go wrong!

Both schools will be FINE. Any “good school” is fine for being premed, even schools ranked far lower than those two. Premed courses aren’t “high level”…they’re basic classes found anywhere.

Premed courses are just regular classes, nothing unique, nothing “med school” or “MCAT,” about them.

Pick the one you LIKE, the one where you’ll get the BEST GPA, and where you’ll have the least loans.

As for your major…Is it one that you LOVE and you know that you’ll get a very high GPA? Or are you picking it because you think it will somehow help you for med school or specialty?
