Uva or american university?

I recently got into UVA and American University. I want to become a doctor. Which school should i go to? Please Honest Opinions!!

The main downside of UVa is large first year classes, including intro chem and intro bio. Also, UVa is tougher in granting some AP credit. However, overall UVa has a great pre-med program and strong sciences. AU is good at many things, but conventional wisdom is it does not have a strong reputation in sciences.

If you are in-state, I would definitely choose UVa.

Yeah thats the only problem about UVA is that it has big classes for freshman. I really like being able to connect to my teachers, and at AU it seems like it would be easier. UVA has a great pre-med program, however AU has numerous internships that you could do while in DC. The plus side of UVA is that I am an in-state student and probably will get almost a full ride there, where at AU I would have to get 9,000 in loans every year. So I’m at a dead-end, I dont know what to do.

What kind of internships in D.C. were you thinking of? Things related to a health care career or something outside of that? Because UVa has a hospital and a medical school that are, for all intents and purposes, RIGHT ON THE SAME CAMPUS AS THE UNDERGRADS. You should be able to get opportunities to shadow a doctor, find research opportunities with med school professors, volunteer in the hospital, etc., in Charlottesville.

Plus, medical school is VERY expensive and you don’t want to be amassing a lot of debt even before you get there.

There are other, smaller in-state options–did you apply to any other Va state schools?

If you’re looking for smaller class sizes and a really great location for internships and future jobs, I’d have to say AU. UVa’s great, but it seems like you want a more personal experience with your professors and American can really do that for you. Even though you’re in-state, $9,000/year is a steal for a private school education especially at such a great place like AU>

Thank you all for your opinions!!! I really appreciate it!
And the other in-state schools that I’ve been accepted into are James Madison University and Virginia-Tech.

I would definitely choose UVA. If you need to take out that much in loans, you’ll be drowning in debt before you even attend medical school. Take the in-state tuition at UVA and wind up with little or no debt.

It’s not like you’ll be making a sacrifice either; UVA is a wonderful school with a great reputation, and now you know it’s affordable.

I’d choose American for International Relations, Public Affairs, Communications, Business. But (and especially at that cost) I’d choose UVA for anything in the liberal arts, and especially in the sciences. At AU, liberal arts students are a minority (which is very rare these days), and science students are a smaller minority. You will get lots of personal attention. But you will likely find more opportunities (at a better price) at UVA.

If you are planning on med. school, don’t take on more debt than you absolutely have to.

I say UVa, provided that your out of pocket cost is similar to your out of pocket cost to attend AU. In one of your posts, you implied that have not yet heard from UVa re: admission and/or financial aid, so any decision may be premature based on current information.

Thanks everyone for all the info!!!
I REALLY appreciate it, and I understand each view point.
However, I am leaning more towards UVA at this point,
but as of right now, I do not know the exact cost of attendance for UVA,
so everything is pure guesstimates.
Once I receive everything from UVA (which should be in a week)
I will defiantly repost on here my final decision, just in case you guys
were curious. lol
Thanks sooo much again!!!
Websites like this help out soo much, especially when your making a big decision like this.

I have decided on UVA!!!
GO WAHOOS!!!
