UVa or Johns Hopkins?

if both are free? And majoring in biology?

If you want a life outside of school, UVa, though JHU is probably more renowned in bio.

You have to figure out what's more important to you: A higher ranked program, or more social life/athletics/clubs, etc.

good luck, they're both great schools!

Make sure you visit both schools if you havnt already, especially JHU. I found JHU's campus and the surrounding area horrible. For graduate school it may be alright but definitely not for undergraduate.

no...wrong. Baltimore is a very cool place and the JHU campus is really nice. If you hate cities then don't go to Baltimore, but I love it.

I'm not wrong, you just have a different opinion.

Both great schools. UVA is a cooler place for the overall college experience.

okay so. let's address some falsehoods.

vc08: you can have a life at both schools. Johns Hopkins has done quite a bit in the past few years to get rid of the idea that "fun comes to die" at Johns Hopkins. Student life is very active and because many students are in the sciences, the major focus is science. However, there is a large number of humanities students as well with a good basis for that. But if you want a social life, you can have it at both schools. Hopkins is closer to DC and in Baltimore so you have better access to clubs; quite a few of my friends go to Hopkins and they arrange buses for themselves to go to clubs and bring them back. Vc08, could you tell me who the Div. I Lacrosse champions are on the men's side? At Hopkins, Lacrosse is the unifying sport; their homecoming is in the spring for lax season. To say that UVA has better sports would be comparing apples and oranges; they may have a better football team but hopkins has a better lax team by far.

backlash: YOU ARE COMPLETELY BLIND. unless you hate trees, nature, marble stairs (OUTSIDE!!!), and love dirt and the dreary brown color of nature's death, there's no way you could hate hopkins' campus. It is stunning. And to be quite honest, UVA has NOTHING compared to hopkins' campus. Also, Hopkins has had many complaints of the surrounding area and so, they are involved in an immense number of amazing outreach programs and as a result, the area around Hopkins is steadily improving. The street directly facing Hopkins is quite nice with trees lining the sidewalks, but once you pass this point, you seem to have fallen into a different part of Baltimore. As I said, Hopkins is improving this and undergoing many construction projects to attract more professors and students.

So. back to your original question. If both were free, then I would choose Johns Hopkins. Why? Because their undergraduate program is notoriously difficult and I would love to work that hard and see the fruits of my labor. Hopkins also has better resources for sciences and can give you a few more opportunities. However, UVA also has excellent science resources and can offer you things that only a state college can.

Alas, everything in life isn't free. If it was, I would be attending Hopkins. However, I turned them down to attend UVA because I save over 150K and I need to pay for med school. UVA also has a good neuroscience program which was another defining factor for me. (Hopkins has an amazing neuro program but it's not worth an extra 40K per year)

Whatever college you choose, you will be attending an excellent institution both of which have their merits. The decision won’t be an easy one. Good luck.

also, dean J created a thread for UVA vs. _____________ (you're supposed to fill in the name of the other institution.) don't clutter the forum with this when a clear place has been established for these types of threads.

"And to be quite honest, UVA has NOTHING compared to hopkins' campus."

LOL...that is all I'm going to say to that.

Maybe I shouldn't have described the campus as "horrible"....but the immediate surrounding area still is. For example: as I get out of my car to go find some place to eat, there is a fist fight in the middle of the street! The whole block was watching the two men (obviously from the area) go at it.

"Hopkins has had many complaints of the surrounding area and so, they are involved in an immense number of amazing outreach programs and as a result, the area around Hopkins is steadily improving."

let me point out the words "steadily improving." and just because you see one bad incident not even on campus, you can't generalize about the entire surrounding area. and trust me, I lived on campus.

and honestly, you're in the city. you're going to see fights. get over it and move on. And how can you say that everyone watching were obviously from the area? Did you go and ask everyone in the crowd or take a survey that represents the population watching? I think not.

I feel like I more accurately represent your name than you do. maybe that's just me; I have a fierce loyalty to hopkins and it will stick with me no matter where I go. Now that I'm a Cavalier, UVA ranks first in terms of loyalty but Hopkins is a close second. And though my previous post may not seem like a pro-UVA type thing, I tell it how it is. I'm not going to butter it up for you.

db: I'm sorry, I wasn't aware that they packed the house for LAX games. And, to be quite honest, since UVa is also a LAX powerhouse, along with a bb sweet 16 program, and pre-season top-25 in football, they're pretty good too.

simple math: UVa>JHU. I'll butter it up: JHU isn't in a safe area. Look up the crime rates if you don't believe me.

That's like people saying South Central LA is nicer than C-Ville. My jaw just drops, and I have no enthusiasm to pull it back up.

vc08, I'm not saying anything bad about UVA. In fact, I chose it over JHU for many reasons so I do love UVA. i just think that you can't say "If you want a life outside of school, UVa" because of preconceived notions about a school that has drastically changed over the past decade.
and I'm not arguing about sports here. Obviously UVA places a bit more emphasis on its athletic program than Hopkins does and I won't dispute that. and hey, I never said that JHU packs the house for lax games; you made that assumption.

simple math? what world do you live in? the fact of the matter is that colleges are multifacted institutions that cannot be summarized into brief (inaccurate) statements like "simple math: UVa> JHU." some aspects of UVA are better than JHU and vice versa.

concerning safety: I never said that Baltimore is free of crime or an exemplary city; it's a city. Actually, I think I said something quite the opposite: "The street directly facing Hopkins is quite nice with trees lining the sidewalks, but once you pass this point, you seem to have fallen into a different part of Baltimore." and if you read around that statement, I said Hopkins was improving; I didn't say it was perfect. Also,

"Some schools are going high-tech to fight crime. At Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, more than 100 so-called smart cameras (they use a computer algorithm to detect suspicious activity) keep a constant eye on campus -- and beyond. The system recently spied a man in an alley behind an off-campus residence peering into sleeping students' rooms. A campus command center was alerted. When the man got into a car, a camera zoomed in on his license plate and then fed the number to police. Minutes later, when an armed robbery occurred nearby, the description of the suspect matched that of the would-be Johns Hopkins intruder, and the police made an arrest."

and this is a study done by reader's digest on campus safety:
<a href="http://www.rd.com/national-interest/education-issues/rd-campus-safety-survey-results-college-rankings/article53719-1.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.rd.com/national-interest/education-issues/rd-campus-safety-survey-results-college-rankings/article53719-1.html</a></p>

download the excel file. I win.

I think the main issue here isn't what the safest campus is; it's the decisions that YOU make that keep you safe. Students need to be smart when going to and from places. And nothing in this world is guaranteed. Look at the shooting at Virginia Tech. No one expected it but it happened. Was there any way to know that it was coming? Does it make Blacksburg a hub of crime? No matter where you go, there's always a risk you choose to take. You can increase or decrease your risk by the choices you make.

I think your jaw dropping is more from ignorance than lack of enthusiasm.

Didn't UVa just beat Hopkins in lacrosse?

yeah. uva beat jhu 13-12 in overtime.

didn't uva just lose to maryland?

yes UVa lost to Maryland. Really, it takes a quick google search of "uva lacrosse" and this information comes up.

"And how can you say that everyone watching were obviously from the area? Did you go and ask everyone in the crowd or take a survey that represents the population watching? I think not."

If you can't tell if people are from the city/ghetto of Baltimore then you need to get outside more. It is definitely obvious...

"To say that UVA has better sports would be comparing apples and oranges; they may have a better football team but hopkins has a better lax team by far."

From somebody who actually knows a great deal about lacrosse....to say that Hopkins has a better lax team by far is extremely incorrect, throughout the last decade both teams have repeatedly been ranked within the top 10 nationally. As was the case last year Hopkins is off to a slow start, yet last year they won the national championship so the jury is still out on them. UVA boasts the number one recruiting class this year we the addition of 3 time All American goaltender Adam Ghitelman as well as the infamous Bratton twins....I think it is safe to say UVA will be ranked among the greats of lacrosse for years to come (but it will always be tough to compete with the dedicated fan base of the baltimore md area)

why would someone choose a school based on a winning team? That seems kind of absurd unless you play on said team.

hmmm thats a good point....i was just getting excited about the prospect of UVA's upcoming dynasty
