UVa Scholarships

I'm a Jefferson Scholar nominee, but have absolutely no illusions of winning the scholarship. What other merit-based scholarships are offered at UVa? Are applicants automatically considered for such scholarships upon turning in their applications?

There are several scholar programs (Echols, Rodman, CSS, and Art to name a few), but few to no merit based scholarships.

^^^Sadly this is too true. Good luck with the Jefferson-my daughter got to the interview stage (a round table 45 minute interview with approximately 6 former Jefferson Scholars) but no further. She was offered Echols (no money).

UVA chooses to put their resources into need based scholarships. In your case, you would be best off applying for private merit based scholarships.

www.fastweb com is still the best source. Also, it is typically easier to obtain local scholarships than national ones.

Thanks for all the replies. Bummer about the lack of merit-based scholarships though…

There are some merit scholarships for current UVa students for specific programs. For most, you apply for the scholarship for your second, third or fourth year. A list has been assembled online by the Alumni Association.

Don’t put stock into the scholarships available to current students… financial aid told me that students tended to get scholarships from UVa after matriculating, rather than part of the initial package, but they are very few and very far between.
