Are there social opportunities at UVa for students who, while they enjoy partying, may not want to do frat parties every weekend?

short answer: yes, there are all sorts of things to do ($3 movies, non-greek parties, sports, arts - drama music dance theaters downtown and on grounds, just hanging out with friends). a favorite of my group of friends is to go out to eat and then go to any of the 24 hour grocery stores, followed by just hanging out until dawn for those of us with no friday classes (we meet thursday nights). going out to eat is a big social experience for many clubs.

“go to any of the 24 hour grocery stores”

Hahaha…I remember my first week or two in Charlottesville when I drove up to Wal-Mart after midnight expecting it to be open 24/hrs (it’s the only thing in my town that is open all night) and I was so upset that it was closed. Driving back down 29 I eventually noticed that most of the grocery stores were open. Thank goodness for Harris Teeter and Kroger…but not the Food Lion on 5th Street. That place should be avoided even during daylight hours. :)

There’s also an ok music scene in Charlottesville. I remember there being a real diverse group of musicians that would come to Fridays after Five.

Mellow Mushroom (on the Corner) has trivia night, and that can be fun…there’s really quite a bit to do, UVA covers a lot more ground than just Rugby Road :)

I think it’s funny how all of my rural VA friends diss the CVille Walmart for not being a Super Walmart or whatever. I dunno, in Philly we just go to Target. My best friend made me eat at the McDonald’s in the Cville Walmart, it was a pretty hilarious experience. Cville is sooooo great. :D
