Yes. I go to a CC in VA, so I'm instate, and I wanted to know my chances for transferring.

By the time I would be applying, which is next fall, I'd have between 45-50 credits. Not an AA, but close enough.

Now, were I go have an, I dunno, 3.2 or something, and a 2100 on the SAT, with good essays, what would my chances be?

Also, my HS GPA is HORRIBLE. Terrible whatever way you look at it. So bad my 3.whatever gpa would look amazing compared to it. Would they take this improvement into consideration?

from reading the posts on CC i've learned that the state of VA has some arrangement with VA community colleges and their state universities...i get the feeling they sort of have to take you? maybe i'm wrong...check into it.

No lol, I wish. What I saw was, if you have a 3.75 and an AA, you are accepted. Of course if they had a buncha transfers with those same numbers, that'd be a factor as well, but I don't know how likely that is.

Either way, I wouldn't have that many credits. I could maybe, depending on if I took a buncha classes during the summer, but I don't think those credits would be factored into the application.

Man, UVA has some lame essays topics. Favorite natural phenomenon?

UVa favors CC transfers slightly, but with the CC-agreement in place, more CCers will be filling spaces as the years continue, so they might try to fill the empty spaces with non-CC transfers. I'm not too sure, because this past year was the first year the agreement was used, and while I was a 4-year institution transfer, there are about 30% from CC (my guess).
Also, the essay topics are not "lame". If you think of them this way, maybe a 4-yr institution, especially one like UVA, is not right for you quite yet. See the essays as a way to express yourself and make you stand out from all of the other applicants. Especially the transfer-specific ones.
As for stats, look on the UVA board, I know mine and many others are there (search the thread for "Transfers Fall '07"). Good luck.

Hmmm, I'm gonna take a bit of offense to your "4 years not quite right for me* insult, and then let it roll.

Of all the essay questions I've seen, UVA's are by far the worst. They are generic in every sense of the word. Extremely common. But that may be the point. Who can make something interesting out of questions you've likely seen 3 million times. I'm not very good at BSing though.

That said, it'd be nice if they gave ya a little something better to work on. And the Natural Phenomenon is just totally random. All other schools I've seen have questions geared more to what school you're applying to. Engineering students fill out questions differently from medical, from Liberal Arts, etc.

There are no transfer specific essays, just a few little answers that are you filling out info.

blipsta~ anything on the UVA application has a purpose. those who want the incredible experience of a UVA education approach the paperwork as..uh, "ok, how high do you want me to jump?" as opposed to, "you want me to jump, where?" as i remember from my d's application, it WAS one of the hardest, most elaborate, with very UNusual essays. meant to make you think...and write well! good luck!

The problem is that it isn't unusual. It's odd for me to see a topic and not get an idea of what I want to write. I mean, SOMETHING. The problem is they are soooo generic. Its like, how can I be expected to write something having even the slightest bit of enthusiasm when this is what you're providing me?

It's like expecting me to create some wonderful, elaborate dish with burgers, hotdogs and coleslaw or something. Generic Generic Generic.

But that's just me. All I need is a topic. That seems like it's gonna be the hardest part for UVA's essays.

They are not "generic". I have never seen a topic like "your favorite natural phenomenon", and thus, it made me think hard about what really is my favorite. I ended up doing the three people to a dinner, and picked all engineers, thus relating it to my field. This brings me to my next point: they're not asking you to do much other than say "I like tornados because they look cool". It's up to you to make it more than that, and they want to see if you can do that.
As for the transfer specific essays, I had total enthusiasm writing them because I truly wanted to transfer out of VT and to UVA, and it showed.

The point of UVA's essays are to make you think and let you choose how to answer them. That's the beauty of UVA: you, the students, run everything here, and it begins in the application.

i remember my d. did the one on, "when you look out a window, you see..." it was totally awesome what she did with that! i think it helped her get in ! and now she's a proud graduate in a wonderful job, while she wonders about grad school!

I agree. My essays got me into UVA, hands down.
