UVA Transfer

Has anyone transferred to UVA? How was the transistion? Did it meet your expectations? What school did you transfer to? Stats? How was housing? any other thoughts?

Applying to SEAS (engineering) for sophmore year

Freshman at Virginia Tech
In-state applicant
Female
3.1 GPA <> 3.2 for my major-req. classes (14 credit hours, but ALL math/science because i tested out of the 3-credit freshman english…lowest grade was B- in a geology class, but had B in chem/calc II/vector calculus, and A- in engineering class/chem lab)
next semester: 17 credit hours (mulitvariable, eng class, C++ class, Java class, linear algebra, physics/lab)
will have completed all requirements for transfer to e-school

3.6 HS GPA (4.2 senior year…had a rough junior year, talked about it in essays)
1380 SAT
8 APs (world history, US history, eng language, physics, calcAB, us gov’t, comp. gov’t, eng lit)

good ECs (girl scouts, key club historian senior year, NHS, lots of community service, tutored at local elem. school every saturday for all four years of high school during school year, SGA senator at VT, had job all four years of HS, tutoring at mathlab next semester, member of society of women engineers, internship lined up for next summer at EE/ChemE company)

good recs (two from calc/physics HS teachers, both had me two years, HS guidence counseler which is required, and then one from my advisor and one from a prof. this semester, not sure who yet)

really good “why are you leaving/why uva?” essay, i focused on both academics (huge difference in curriculum, more electives, study abroad opporunities, ect) and the social aspect (more intellectual students, more connection between town/school, more clubs/activities, tradition, ect)
other essays are pretty good (im transferring to get more of a liberal arts education, because i happen to be good at writing =P)

I think your chances are slim to none. Sorry. Despite a challenging semester, I think your GPA is simply too low at this point. Moreover, from what you've given, your essays sound somewhat cliche, and nothing really stands out as to why specifically you want to attend UVA, over, say, Vandy, etc.

Perhaps putting in some more time at Tech, and pulling some better grades will do you some good.

FWIW, I was admitted to UVA as a spring xfer a few years back, but decided not to attend.

well, about my essays, i didn't go into too much detail because nobody wants to read blahblahblah. But, I pointed out key differences between VT and UVA's engineering curriculum, such as a lot more elective choices, a more liberal art-sy approach to engineering, and more room to have a minor (I'm two classes away from a history minor, but I can't get it at VT anymore). I also focused on the different atmospheres that exist at both, and how UVA's would fit more. Also, UVA has a study abroad (Semester At Sea) that has a specific engineering summer program, which is somewhat uncommon. If you would want to breeze through my "why uva" essay, i'm sure you'd realize why I want to go so much. Shoot me a PM, and maybe you'll see.

The only thing i have going for me (besides instate and female and a good HS record (which is up to UVA standards for IS) and first-gen) is coming from VT. VT's engineering is ranked higher than UVA's, but regardless, VT prides itself on having "weeder" courses. The average GPA for first years was a 2.78, 27% of the class has to retake calcII (however, stupid VT fails to mention that the entire class isnt taking calcII), and the ECE course im presently enrolled in has a 30%-40% failure rate. A dean from SEAS i've been contacting about classes and such inquired about my GPA, and told me that anything above a 3.0 from VT is consider competative, and coming from both in-state, from a good school, and with above a 3.0, i have a better chance than OOS and CCers. All of my pre-requisites are now completed, I have an extra compsci class (VT requires C++, UVA requires JAVA, so i'm taking both), and more math classes.
Besides, if the average transfer GPA for CAS is a 3.4, then engineering obviously has to be lower, right?

A 3.4 avg GPA? Wow...I'm not sure if I believe that. A 3.4 is barely better than average at most schools. But anyway...

Yes, Tech as weeder classes, as does UVA, as do many schools, but if you've been told by a SEAS dean that your GPA is competitive, then go with that. I see that you only mentioned your in-major GPA, how's your overall look, esp in the liberal arts classes? Your HS GPA etc. may help, but I wouldn't look for it to contribute significantly.

Funny that you mentioned the "liberal art-sy approach to engineering" at UVA...you do realize that this is the main reason why UVA's program isn't very well regarded?

I was caught off guard too by that, but during a transfer chat they said on average the GPA is between 3.3 and 3.5. However, when I emailed the admissions people they said "it is around a 3.5"...so who knows haha
Tech has a much more rigerous program than UVa freshman year, simply because we take an extra math course and our chemistry is ridiculous (UVa's is pretty bad too though i've heard, and their CalcII is pretty tough)
as for GPA, i only had one class outside of engineering (geology) and got my lowest grade in it (B-)...the lack of liberal arts classes is why im transferring...as for HS record, they look at it 50/50 with college record, and focus on senior year

UVa's engineering is ranked around #30, VT is #17...so, they don't differ too much. Also, for EE, UVa is one behind VT, so again, not that much difference. I just want more freedom in the classes I can take, and UVa has many more open elective slots, and you don't have to take 17 credits every darn semester.

Hey guys I am a sophomore at Penn State main campus…I am done with the 10 business pre-req courses and I have a 3.3 gpa. I am from northern va and was wondering what my chances of transferring into UVA’s college of Arts and Sciences with the intention of becoming an ECON major. I dominated all my business courses here at Penn State but got tripped up a little bit in my math courses. I currently am sitting at 42 completed hours with 12 hours being completed through summer and aps.

Thanks!!

chance me:
freshman at umd cp
hs gpa-3.34 (unweighted)
aps- 5
college gpa- 3.57 (top 20% of class)
sat- math 640, reading 680, writing 640
what i think is a pretty good transfer essay
lots of very strong leadership ECs, in national honor society, some sports
out of state too
