so i got off the waitlist at CMC and I have a week to decide. Im in the Echols Scholars program at UVA, so thats a plus, and I want to join a sorority. Not from the south though, but west coast, so not sure if that will hurt my chances of getting in one. Also not sure if UVA has really large classes, becaue I want to get to know the professors, which I know students do at CMC. Any advice?
and ya, i posted this same thread in CMC, but I thought i might get different responses from this category..

btw i want to study economics and political science, then go on to law school

These are two topics close to my heart, since they’ve both been huge positives for D as OOS at UVa…
If I were you, I wouldn’t worry about the sorority situation there. D is west coast–Ca. She says she could have been happy in several of the houses, loved the one she chose, and has met friends from all over the country. She says that while one or two of the sororities are said to favor certain geographics, most, if not all, are welcoming and look for girls who fit the house’s personality regardless of home state. She is one of maybe seven or eight girls from the west coast in her house. She’s loved it. Absolutely no problem.

Part of UVa’s draw is accessibility of profs. It was certainly D’s experience. Honestly, sometimes I couldn’t believe what she would tell me – BBQ’s at their homes, profs. taking classes out for pizza, constant email accessibility, lots of feedback and direction thru-out projects, lunch meetings, access to conferences, job mentoring, etc. She recently had a professor ask to speak with her after class and at her convenience. He apparently thought she showed potential for teaching, and wanted to talk to her about getting a PhD in education. D explained to him that she was in McIntire-and had a job already. That wasn’t his point-he simply wanted to enlighten her about a strength he saw in her that he felt would make her a good candidate for teaching. After speaking with him, she had a real excitement about a career route she had never considered. Who knows? He didn’t need to reach out like that; he knew she was headed in a totally different direction. But he took an hour+ with her anyway.
IMHO, you don’t need to worry about getting to know professors at UVa. You will. Hope others have had similar experiences–we’ve been thrilled. Good luck.

I don’t think you have to worry about accessibility to professors. Here and everywhere else your daughter has to take the initiative to set up meetings with the professors. So far I have no problem setting up a meeting with any professor, since most of them love to see the students come by their offices and chat. Even at the smallest college if your daughter doesn’t take the initiative your daughter wouldn’t get the attention unless she is as bright as the girl in the above post.

UVA with Echols obviously
