UVA vs. Berkeley vs. McCombs

Hi:

I am interested in majoring in Business. I have an admission from McCombs - UT Austin for its four year business program. I have offers from UVA and UC Berkeley. However in both these schools, I would need to get into business school in the junior year and hence business major is guaranteed. Any inputs from current/former students on the following would be greatly appreciated
• Ease of getting into McIntire (UVA) and Haas (Berkeley) in the junior year
• Comparison among the three business school.
• Should I go with the safe option of McCombs or should I take chances and try for McIntire or Haas?

I heard that both UVA and Berkeley are very competitive in the first two years because of students trying to get into the business major.

Are you a TX resident? If so and you don’t mind a very, very large school, I would suggest going with UT. UT, like the others, has a great business school, and you’re right – you’ve got the bird in the hand already vs. McIntire and Haas. Obviously, though, the biggest incentive is the tuition. UT is a great value to TX residents. However, if, like my daughter, a HUGE school is simply not a good fit for you, I would choose UVA. I don’t think I’d pick Berkeley at all, but that’s just me. The school is in financial uncertainty, so classes will be difficult to secure, and it’s quite possible you’ll add a year to your tuition/housing bill. (Cal students are typically taking five years to graduate due to inaccessibilty to required courses.)

just a quick reply as I don’t have too much time to write a long, well thought-out response (thank you finals week coming up in 2 weeks! ) but I was OOS for UVa and IS for Cal, and also looking to major in business, and I didn’t even consider going to Berkeley. As jc40 says, the UC system really is in shambles. My dad’s former coworker is the CFO for UCB and he talks to him (albeit infrequently) and the situation really isn’t that great. Also, I have tons of friends at UCB and the competition to get into the business school is REALLY high (can’t comment on UVa as I know nothing about it). It really is cutthroat. Berkeley is a cool school, awesome area, and I go up to visit my sister (senior there) a couple times a year and I have a blast (but that’s because her friends are hot/they’re normal haha) but there are some WEIRD ass kids there. A lot of socially awkward people. I don’t know, kind of a rant lol but just thought I’d get it out there
