UVA vs Georgetown (economics)

I'd appreciate any and all responses.

I am transferring in as a sophomore.

Cost is of no concern.

Currently I am an economics major and plan on minoring in finance. My interest is in business, perhaps consulting.

I am not a business major because I hope to get an MBA, and I have read that schools favor a liberal arts background. I also like the variety of job prospects that an economics degree offers.

With that said, would an international economics degree from Georgetown's SFS be more valuable in the business/grad school world than an economics degree from either college? IR seems interesting to me though I cannot say whether or not it is what I would want to be involved with. Would this be my future with an int. econ degree?

I have been to both schools and love both campuses. I like the idea of being in a frat but it is not make or break. I will say that I think I would prefer a larger school.

For various reasons I am leaning towards UVA. DC and my uncertainty of the value of an international economics degree keep this a neck and neck race, though.

Again, any information that would help with my decision would really help me out. Thanks!

I’ll also add that I was accepted to vanderbilt as well, though I have never been and I haven’t seen anything to suggest its economics program is any stronger than either uva’s or georgetown’s.

You need to decide if you want to study econ or finance/business at UVa. If you are interested in econ that is part of CLAS, no extra application needed. If you are interested in business/finance you would have to apply in your second year to the McIntire School of Commerce, a two year program your third and forth years. There are prereq’s you have to have completed by your forth semester (i.e. have taken or be taking when you apply). The admission is based largely on GPA.

So, you would need to consider if you want to take the admit to Georgetown where it sounds like you don’t need any additional steps, or take a chance at UVa being accepted at McIntire if you wanted to study finance. If you want to stay with econ you are fine at UVa, however anything with business or finance you have to be accepted to McIntire.

Well I think I am going to be studying economics regardless, I just meant that for a career I’d like to be involved in business.

With that being said, as a sophomore transfer will it be significantly harder for me to be accepted to mcintire if I chose to apply?

Also, I saw mcintire offers a leadership minor, but do they offer others such as finance as well? I couldn’t find any information. I did see, though, that you can study economics with a concentration in finance.
