I've been accepted as a transfer student to both UNC and UVA and don't know which to pick. I understand that UVA is a little bit stronger academic/reputation-wise, but the stereotype of the "typical UVA kid" is deterring me, as I'm very liberal and what I can tell of the general atmosphere/attitude isn't appealing. Any insight on which I should pick is very appreciated.

Culturally, UVa seems to be a little more conservative than UNC, but there have already been extensive debates regarding the two schools:

There are 15,000 students at UVa - I’m sure a single stereotype doesn’t fit all 15,000 of them, and you can find some students who you’ll want to hang out with. Have you visited?

Trust me, all UVA kids aren’t conservative. Stereotypes have roots, I guess, but there are a good number of liberals there. Two examples- Katie Couric and Tina Fey are alums.

Are cost and strength of your major subject significantly different between the two?

As a transfer student who faced this same dilemma last year, I think I can provide some help. UVA and UNC are very similar schools; both are top public universities in great college towns with a good sports scene. Both schools are obviously strong academically. I chose UVA more for personal reasons (family attended/closer to home). If it hadn’t been for this, it would have made the decision even more difficult. Just know that you can’t go wrong in your choice and to never look back. Maybe I’ll see you in Charlottesville next year Feel free to PM me!
