UVa vs. UT Austin (Chemical Engineering major)

Hey guys,

I am an international student from Saudi Arabia. I have been admitted into both schools and have been asking many people and they all have different opinions.

I am personally leaning towards UT Austin for their highly-reputed engineering programs and its location/weather. However, I am also considering UVa for its campus, overall ranking and prestige.

Most of my friends are telling me to go to UT Austin but the professor who supervised my research told me to go to UVa, and he had a lot of great points (more prestigious, more selective, more well-rounded undergrad education, rich campus life, etc).

Where should I go?

“more prestigious, more selective, more well-rounded undergrad education, rich campus life, etc).”

Absolutely true about UVa. I don’t know for engineering but UVA is better overall. UT-Austin is extremely big and its 90% texans. University of Virginia has only 70% in-state. UVa is more expensive.

University of Virginia is an elite public university. University of Texas at Austin is a top public university.

UVA is a vastly overrated university with a second tier faculty. UT for engineering easily.

Your professor is mis-informed:

University of Texas:
Overall engineering #10
Chem engineering #4
Petroleum engineering #1
Chemistry #12
Physics #14
Math #14

University of Virginia
Overall engineering #34
Chemical engineering #20
Petroleum engineering n/a
Chemistry #45
Physics #40
Math #46

What specifically make UVa more well-rounded?

Most people will tell you that UT-Austin offers a richer campus life. Btw, Austin is called the live music capital of the world.

Austin is the silicon valley of the south. Texas is the oil center in the US. Which university is more prestigious in Saudi Arabia?

For engineering this isn’t really debatable. Texas all the way!
