I got accepted into both UVA and VTECH. UVA has always been my dream school, and I couldn't believe I actually got accepted.
My concerns are:
1) I'm a hard worker, but I think there is still a limit to how much you can work. Since I will be below average at UVA, I don't want to die trying to get good grades at UVA and not actually enjoy the college life.
2) I'm not sure if it's accurate, but I have been on the UVA facebook page for a while, and everyone seemed to be the "I love to party and I play the lacrosse type". I'm not dissing on anyone, but I don't know whether I will be able to fit in the culture.
What's the school life difference between UVA and Vtech?
3) I am undecided in both schools. However, I'm thinking about doing accounting. At UVA, if I want to major in accounting, I have to get do 2 years of pre-comm and then get into the UVA commerce school. However, it's really competitive to get in. I'm thinking if I don't get into the commerce school at UVA, even though there are alternative paths, I'll be wasting classes and time and end up not getting the major that required me to take those classes. So, will it be better to go to vtech for accounting, because vtech Pamplin will be easier to get into (most likely), so I will actually have a major in accounting? I know UVA is more prestigious but I also heard that if you work hard, it doesn't really matter which school you go to, especially when it's something like accounting. As long as you do well (or get a major in accounting and do internships), you will be able to get a good job.
Thank you so much.

I know this is too late…but you make very good points…if you know you want accounting…it is a no-brainer - go to Tech…the big 4 accounting firms get more kids from Tech than McIntire - as the McIntire kids see themselves at Goldman Sachs, etc…at Tech you won’t have to sweat the competition with the particle physics types who should be at MIT.

The #1 through #4 top ranked accounting firms in the world make up 4 of McIntire’s top 5 recruiters. If you want to get into a top accounting firm, McIntire is a great place to be. It may not be common knowledge, but McIntire is the #2 undergraduate business school in the country, it really is a remarkable place for any future career.

I would actually consider the best course of action would to be to attended tech, where the accounting degree is more promising to obtain (McIntire’s admissions process is simply too stringent–half of uva students who apply are rejected). I would then apply for transfer to McIntire, which is in fact more difficult than UVA admission to McIntire, but you will at least have that future accounting degree from Tech in your hand.

Big Four accounting is not like investment banking, where you absolutely must come from a top business school. Tech can certainly get you there without too much trouble, its also an amazing school, and Blacksburg is a wonderful area. I’d promise yourself the major first, go to Tech, and then try to move into a place like McIntire afterwards.

There is a girl at McIntire, who did exactly this. I’m sure that her advice would be to maintain a 3.8 GPA at Tech as you apply for the transfer. And if you shoot for a GPA like that, you ought to place into the Big Four no problem, as McIntire or even not

Best of luck,
-a McIntire transfer student.

*as a McIntire student or even not :)

Great idea by the above poster. But really, don’t major in accounting. Accounting is boring and you will be sad.
