Uvic/ University of Victoria Social Scene/Partying

Hey guys,

Recently been accepted into Uvic for Sep 2014. Iv done loads or research but havnt manged to really get an idea of the party/club scene. Please any info would be great even if its just about Uvic in general. Thanx for the help.

Graduated from UVic in 1992, lived on the South Island from 87- 2013.
There are a half dozen bars and clubs downtown. Government St. and Johnson and Fort St between Blanshard and Douglas are key emtertainment districts downtown. Clubs seem to be often changing names. Being a port city and home of Canada’s Pacific Fleet means it gets pretty crazy when the sailors drop in.
There are a lot of smaller parties around. Without any Greek Frat culture on campus, it’s definitely not what you would expect in a major US centre.
Keep in mind a couple of things. 1) It’s a small city of just over 350,000. 2) With a strong British culture, there are a lot more neighborhood pubs than clubs. 3) there is a comment that Victoria is for the Newly-Wed or Nearly Dead. Sidewalks roll up pretty quickly outside the entertainment district.
Pub nights on campus were busiest on Thursdays. There are a number of good pubs nearby, just a short crawl down the hill from the campus.
If there are other questions I can help with, feel free to PM. If I can’t answer, I have a great friend in Admissions at UVic.
