Uvm honors academics

i applied to uvm as a safety school, but i didn’t really know anything about it. i got in, was admitted to the honors college, and given a large scholarship. i visited it on admitted students day and i totally loved it! but, as i’m not from new england, i don’t really know what reputation uvm holds. i’ve done a lot of research on the school’s academics, community, and students, but i don’t know MUCH about the education students receive. basically, i’m just wondering if if i attended uvm honors, would i get a great education? total biases aside, do you learn a lot and well there? are you prepared for post-grad life (specifically going to good grad schools or law schools)? thanks !!!

@soitgoes I went to UVM and they were my safety school. While I will admit that you will have the opportunity to take “easy” classes, you really get to determine the classes you take. Thus means that you can take challenging courses throughout your time there. The Honors College will add an extra level of difficulty but will also help you develop as a scholar and critical thinker- it is a great opportunity! As far as classes go, they’re fairly demanding and if you’re thinking of Law School later, UVM has a 3+2 program that’s highly successful: https://www.uvm.edu/admissions/undergraduate/university_vermont_vermont_law_school_32_program

Hi, does has anyone been notified about honors AFTER the first wave went out? Are they accepting more students to honors? Do you know if you haven’t been asked to be honors yet if there is a way to get it? Thanks!

@collegemomjam- they do several rounds of HC invitations. I am not sure when the next one is, but I do know that the last round goes out at the end of March.

“has anyone been notified about honors AFTER the first wave went out”

Yes. I have seen a student accepted to UVM honors college after the first wave, and after they had first been accepted somewhat earlier with a merit scholarship. However, even if you do not get into the honors college, UVM is still very much worth attending (particularly if you are either in-state or get a merit scholarship).

The honors college dorm at UVM might be the nicest dorm that I have seen anywhere (although different people will have different definitions of “nice dorm” – the other dorm that I visited at UVM was quite nice also).

UVM is a very good university. I consider it to be pretty much tied with U.Mass Amherst as the best public university in New England (there are other good ones also). If you take pre-med or pre-vet classes there, there will be some very demanding classes. Burlington is also a very nice small city.

What is your intended major? From what I have heard, it appears that UVM is very good for pre-med, pre-vet, animal sciences, neuroscience, exercise sciences, environmental sciences, and probably many other majors. I have heard that it is not all that good for music or physics. I don’t know much about other majors there, but obviously they do have a very wide range of majors.

My DC’s applicant portal was just updated with an invite to the Honors College. DC was an early action admit but didn’t get the Honors College invite until now.

DCmamma, what were DC’s stats?

JeanneAP - 1440 SAT, approx. 3.75 Unweighted GPA, 4.25 weighted. Almost all honors & AP classes.
