Not many people may be able to help me with this, but any advice is welcome! I'm caught in a rift between UW and NYU, and my main concern is about their undergraduate science and business programs. Since I plan on double majoring in each, both subjects are just as important to me. Does UW have strong academics in science (biology, chemistry, etc.) and business (finance, accounting, etc.) compared to those at NYU? Or are they pretty much the same? Thanks!

I admit that I am unfamiliar with which is stronger in sciences, although offhand I'd guess UW (an excellent engineering school).

Business at NYU is far stronger (I'm assuming you'd be in Stern?). If you want to go into investment banking, consulting, or any other very competitive business fields, NYU is the way to go. Not only do all the top firms (Goldman, Morgan Stanley, McKinsey, etc.) recruit at NYU, but you have great opportunities for internships because you'll be living in New York.

But it really depends what you're planning on doing with these two degrees. If you don't care about i-banking and such then NYU might not matter as much. Perhaps a further explanation of your goals will help. And also, I suggest posting this in the NYU forum if you haven't, as that forum probably gets more views than the UW one.

Unfortunately, I made the big mistake of applying to the College of Arts and Sciences instead of doing Stern, but I plan on transferring IF business is REALLY what I want. See, that's my main issue; I can't choose between the medical route or the business one, which is why I am looking for the college that is strong in both fields and not just one. My other option is Whitman, and hopefully WashU, Hopkins, or Chicago if I can get off their wait list, but those are not guaranteed.

You totally guessed it. I would definitely go into banking if I chose business, and would undoubtedly pick NYU if that were the case. I'm just too indecisive. Medicine seems tedious, while business is risky.

Would you suggest attending UW for the first year, and spend time studying and seeing what I really want instead of double majoring?

Hmmm...well I see that you posted in the NYU forum and don't have any responses yet, sorry!

So my new suggestion would be to do a bunch of searches on CC to find threads relating to:
1) How easy it is to transfer to Stern. I honestly have no clue. I know at Penn it's really hard to transfer into Wharton, but I don't know how this works at NYU, but I'm sure it's been discussed on CC before.
2) Once in Stern, how easy is it to double major? At some colleges, double majoring within a school is easy, but doing it in two schools (Stern and CAS) is harder.
3) Premed strength at NYU and UW. I'm sure UW has pretty good premed, due to the proximity of the amazing UW Medical School, although I don't really know for a fact. But you'd probably be able to do research and stuff there (at least at Duke students do that at our hospital), so that would be nice.

Hopefully you can find out more about these three questions, and I think that will help you out. If transferring to Stern is difficult, then I would suggest staying at UW, as I'm sure it would be easier to do both (keep in mind you may not end up doing both in the end).

A few other considerations: I'm assuming you're instate, so money might be an important concern (especially if you want to go to med school). Also, have you visited NYU? Do you like the city? I didn't want to live in New York, so I didn't apply to NYU or Columbia because of that...
