UW Madison Early Action for Fall 2022 Admission

My twins are at a big WI HS—2600 kids. Both direct admits to the business school. They are both high stats kids and submitted ACT scores. We were surprised to hear that every one of their friends was admitted. That’s at least 10 kids. I’m sure many more from their school applied but we haven’t heard of any that weren’t admitted. Very surprised UW accepted them all. Very grateful too! My daughter committed minutes after she read her acceptance letter.

Good call out on reaching out to admissions to understand all options

My daughter was admitted, fairly small school in Wisconsin. 4.0 UW (her school doesn’t do weighted), ranked 1st in class. 30 ACT, 6 APs + honors and gifted courses. Captain of varsity sport, state level honors for choir and band, lead roles in school plays and strong essays. Haven’t heard whether others at her school got in.

Youre admitted to the college of letters and sciences, not a specific major. Your major is typically only set in stone sophomore year.

I’m in the same boat as you but from CA. I feel like my grades and EC live up to the expectations, but didn’t submit test scores.

North NJ parent here. PSU is the most attended OOS public university from our area. For many reasons - including proximity and chance of getting accepted. MD and Delaware probably next. We usually have a couple of kids attend Wisconsin every year.

I live in a town with a large, high ranking MN public HS that usually sends 20-30 (or thereabouts) to UW. It has been getting tougher and tougher to get in. If S2 is not accepted(1510/4.0/rigor) RD I will be surprised, but not shocked.

Yes and No- more apply to PSU but enrollment is typically about the same if not slightly higher for Wisco. Numbers seem to reflect PSU being used as a safety, whereas UW is seen as an attractive option for some students. Anecdotally, I see many U Mich applicants applying to UW but don’t hear many of these same students considering Penn State, i.e., I don’t believe there is much overlap in PSU/UW applicants at my D’s school.

Same from OOS CA. S22 did not report test scores and got deferred - not sure if it would have mattered? His supplemental essay was only so-so (IMHO), but he has a 3.93 GPA UW full IB. Hoping for better news in the RD round.

no problem
deferred
4.03 gpa
Test optional
OOS
Strong EC’s
pretty sure strong essays

Accepted. 1330 SAT. 4.0 UW 4.568 W. IB Diploma Candidate. Strong essay. Many EC leadership roles. Captain of Varsity Mock Trial

Congrats on pre business. My son is a sophomore who got was accepted pre business. You have to apply during 2nd semester sophomore. It is not automatic as his roommate did not get accepted due to lower grades. Advantage of direct is you can take a few intro business classes early but my son is in all the same classes as his housemates who were all direct admit so i do not see any disadvantage. You son will take most of his non-business then to fill up freshman year, which was good for my son.

Thank you for your insight. This is helpful info. I was interested in learning if there were any major differences in graduating on time between them, i.e., 4 yrs. Do you recall if you are a direct admit you are eligible for scholarship/merit but if you were pre-business you are not?

son deferred in state 32 act, 3.8 UW, FBLA president, Eagle scout, captain of cross country and swim team. very concerned as 2/3rds of in state applicants supposedly get in

DD had same stats and deferred. What a joke

I was accepted pre-business, but last night I received an email from Wisco that I have been added to the waitlist for direct admit to the BBA program, and a decision will be made by April 15th. This waitlist offer was not in my initial decision letter. I can also now see a request to self-report my midyear grades in my portal. Has anyone else here received an acceptance pre-business and a waitlist for direct admit to the BBA program?

Son, submitted test scores, etc. all very high, OOS deferred, most of his classmates were deferred as well.

There is no way your son should have been deferred with those stats as an in state student!

I know an in state student admitted with unknown GPA, minimal rigor and in pre-calc as a senior. Didn’t report ACT because they scored a 16! Not an athlete. No hardship story, but clearly other factors involved. Must be a hell of an essay writer. Not having to report test scores, when every student in WI takes the ACT in school, has opened up the Wild West of Admissions!

My daughter received the same email. OOS admitted pre business and then received that email.

I’m confused by pre-business vs direct admit business. If you are “pre-business” you are not technically in the B school yet? My daughter was offered business school but how do I see if it’s without any additional hoops?
