D22 OOS Accepted.
That is correct. If a student is admitted as pre-business they are technically in L&S and still need to apply for admission to the business school within their first 4 semesters. So it is an additional hoop but half the slots are filled this way so still a good option. If an incoming student is directly admitted to the business school the admission letter will say āit is my pleasure to offer you admission directly to the Wisconsin School of Businessā
Thank you!
Are there state or university budget issues that might be causing the admissions office to admit more OOS students, who are presumably full-pay, higher pay? Weāve been told by our counselor that thatās one of the reasons OOS applicants have a higher admit rate at the UC schools.
Hi, I recently got into UW-Madison as a pre-business student and received the business direct-admit waitlist email like others in this thread. Does anyone know if there is a good chance of getting off of this waitlist?
For reference, Iām in state with 32 ACT, 4.4 GPA, #1 in my class, pres of student council, varsity athlete, job during summer, along with other leadership ECs
Thanks for any feedback, it is greatly appreciated!
I donāt know what to make of it. Should he send a LOCI +update his midyear grades?
I am the current parent of a UW Madison Junior. I also have a high school junior interested in Madison. Iāve done some side hustle college counseling/advising the past few years.
I just wanted to mention yield is at UW is very up the last few years. Itās my understanding the last 3 freshman classes have been the largest classes in UW history. I suspect they are holding some applications especially from areas with lots of applications in and more expected for regular admissions to look at them all together in context so they can control yield better. I am hoping a lot of you will get some love during the regular round.
We are from Minnesota, MN admits especially from Minneapolis/Saint Paul and suburbs are ever harder. My junior was also a very high stat/apply anywhere kind of student.
Son accepted into pre business,
OOS
1480 and 4.3 W/3.7 UW
Large public high school in IL
Lots of ECās
Got a letter on Saturday after his acceptance that is actually on the business school waitlist because of so many applications. So hoping he clears the waitlist. Any ideas how many people the waitlist each year? Should know in April.
Many people seem to be referencing this letter. Is the letter saying that if you get off the wait list you are direct into WSB or is it saying that if you get off the waitlist you are in LS and pre-business?
If you get off such waitlist you are business direct admit. In our Cali HS know of 2 Michigan and lower ivy admits that were wisco deferrals. Apps must be way way up reading this forum again.
My twin daughters last year from MN had similar stats and both were deferred in EA and then denied n March. At their private school, typically 7-8 kids get accepted to UW-Madison but last year only 2 were accepted. One had a 35 ACT score (GPA above 4.0) and the other was in an underrepresented diversity category. Our college counselor was shocked. He didnāt know if standards for MN students just got that much higher (and they are always pretty high because of the volume of applicants from MN and they donāt pay full out of state tuition) or if the pool was so much bigger because of the class prior taking a gap year during Covid lockdowns. Itās unbelievably hard for MN students to get into UW Madison. It was the only Big 10 and SEC school that didnāt admit my daughters. Iām following these boards because I have a junior who is interested in UW Madison (Iām an alumni) and it appears that nothing has changed this year. If it gives you any consolation, one of my daughters got an almost full academic merit scholarship at a SEC school (she didnāt even wait for March to make her decision) and loves it and my other daughter is at a Big 10 school and loves where she is at. Good luck!! Some MN kids have to get in, right?
Daughter (OOS) accepted. 3.9 UW to LSA, test optional. Very excited - amazing school!
If anyone is interested this is the Common Data Set from last year, the most current info available. It is interesting that test scores donāt seem to be extremely important in selection of applicants. If you are not familiar with this every school fills it out, sometimes itās hard to find on the website.

OOS son was deferred, if I am reading the data set correct, last year they only accepted 14/4335 on the waitlist? Thatās insane. He will have to certainly move past this, and continue is search.
deferred is not the same as waitlist. Deferred means a decision will be made later- typically with RD apps, whereas a waitlist is dependent upon someone committed to the school to drop/ change his/her mind opening up a slot. I suspect the reason so many are being deferred this year ( at many schools) is because yield is too difficult to predict. Increase in applications is not a result of more students applying; it is students applying to more schools. This means yield will be lower & historical metrics are no longer valid for schools to determine how many acceptances will yield their targeted enrollment
Does anyone know when aid comes out? Is the information on the Financial Aid portion of the portal just an estimate?
Super interesting!
Thank you for the explanation. I would love to know the amount of deferred students that end up admitted.
OOS daughter was deferred. Congrats to everyone that was accepted! UW is a fantastic school. My husband attended almost 30 years ago and loved it. Lol! I still have his winter coat from college, and it is the thickest coat I have ever seen!
As would many people, for many schools. Unfortunately, MIT is the only one Iāve seen that publishes this detailed information.
