Heres the question and I have an outline of what to write. Tell me if it would work with the prompt please.

Tell us why you decided to apply to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition, share with us the academic, extracurricular, or research opportunities you would take advantage of as a student. If applicable, provide details of any circumstance that could have had an impact on your academic performance and/or extracurricular involvement.

What I want to do is have two paragraphs of why I've always wanted to study literature in college. I'm gonna put a story of a literature competition that showed me how much I wanted to study that and then in paragraph two talk in detail about what specific literature works for me. Then I'll talk about why UW-Madison is the best option for me. I know this doesn't directly follow the prompt but is that ok?

Always follow directions. Answer the questions asked.

UW wants to know why you think UW is a good choice for you. They want to know your background. They do not want a generic discussion of a proposed major followed by btw it works at UW. They know most entering freshmen either have no major or will change the one stated. Your proposed essay sounds like it doesn’t answer any of the questions asked. Show that you read and understood the prompt.

I suggest you specifically talk about UW Madison opportunities you would take advantage of. It doesn’t show much interest or effort if you only talk about wanting to study literature. UW wants to know HOW you plan to study literature at UW-Madison. What opportunities will you pursue? Is it a degree in Comparative Literature? Will you apply to the L&S Honors program to take advantage of honors courses in your area of interest? Do you plan to study abroad in a certain country to fully understand a certain area of literature?

Your essay should make it clear that you have looked into how you will take advantage of the specific programs and opportunities here.

Is there a specific area of literature you are especially interested in? If so, check out this link for Comp Lit faculty specialty areas. Read all the bios, find which professor is an expert in areas you want to learn more about. Perhaps refer in your essay to hoping to take that professor’s courses or meet that professor, etc etc. MAKE THE ESSAY SPECIFIC

For example, maybe you are especially interested in Comparative Mythology - this is a specialty area of Professor Max Statkiewicz.

Or if you don’t know your specific area of interest yet, write how you would love the opportunity to study a broad variety of literature types from Gender Studies and Queer Theory (Professor Casid) to Greek and Roman Poetry (Professor Rosenmeyer) to poetic theory (Professor Ramalho de Sousa Santos).

Thanks for the help. Do you think it’s ok if I still have a paragraph of why I got into literature from the competition I was in? Also Madison85 do you have any links and information for Biomedical Engineering at UW?
