UW-Madison L&S Honors Program - for Income First Year Students

As I recall from last year, there is a rolling deadline to apply to the L&S Honors program depending on when the first year applicant accepts the offer of admission.

For incoming first year students, the application information comes via email to the email address submitted with the student's application. Everyone can apply, it's not limited by ACT score or GPA.

DON'T MISS YOUR SPECIFIC DEADLINE - there are no exceptions.

Last year there was a parent who was very upset because his child got the email but didn't read through it initially, and then it was too late and despite follow up and phone calls the child could not apply late (and would have to wait until the next year).

There was another example of twins who were accepted a few days apart. Each twin's deadline to apply to the L&S Honors program was different and one twin missed it.

Sometimes it is easier to get into a full class if you take if for honors because there are designated honors sections.

From what I understand, the student doesn't have to complete the honors program but the courses taken for honors will be designated as such on the transcript. It's not a problem if the student would enjoy the opportunity of honors classes but later intends to apply to business school or pharmacy school.

L&S Honors Program

The Honors program is great. You can join at a later date if you don’t as an incoming freshman. The transcript shows an “H” with each course completed for honors even if you don’t get an Honors degree of some kind (then it shows up on your diploma). Honors program members now get other benefits as well, plus an Honors advisor for SOAR. You can also leave the program at any time so it isn’t a college long decision. No special housing so no limits there.
