I am admitted to both UW and WSU Vancouver campus. I live in Vancouver, so if attending WSUV, I can live at home. I want to major in Electrical Engineering. Currently, WSU has offered me at least $3000 scholarship, while UW doesn't. Are the two colleges very different in the quality of the instructors? Which should I choose to attend? Thank you.

UW is ranked a far higher school, and while it may be a bit more expensive, it is well worth it. WSU is kinda where people go when they realize it’s time for high school to be over so they might as well apply somewhere. I’m in a rush so I can’t go into much detail, but I trust that someone will explain more. Overall, the quality of your education will be far greater at UW, especially if you are going into a science field (since UW is one of the top ranked schools in the nation for “sciencey” majors.

If this were Udub vs WSU-Pullman, I would tell you to follow the money. But WSUV is not of the same caliber as the main campus.

Unless you Udub involves prohibitive debt, I would go there.

There’s also quite a difference between UW and the main WSU campus. Just take a look at the GPA’s on the Collegeboard website.

I concur with just4ivaylo. (Obviously, I cannot be unbiased-I will be a Husky next year!) If you are serious about your future and know what you want to do, and want the “better” education, I suggest choosing UW over any WSU campus. Of course, it is what you make of each professor’s lesson, but what you make of a more learned professor’s lesson will affect you far differently than what you make of a mediocre professor’s lesson. And I’m sure there are excellent professor’s @ WSU and dull professors @ UW, but overall-generally speaking-UW is more respected and prestigious-especially in sciences.

So far, I have only touched on the academic aspect. But there are also obvious differences in location, graduation rate, greek system, campus vibe, and many other categories that you may consider more important than the above so take those into consideration as well! Best of luck!

I know there’s a bit of a rivalry here…

Anyway, there will be smart and stupid students on any campus. I agree that UW has more of the former than WSU, but I wouldn’t go into debt over it. Since there is a major glut of PhDs in this country, even lower-tier schools often attract some pretty good faculty.

I’m not quite sure how you know that “what you make of a more learned professor’s lesson will affect you far differently than what you make of a mediocre professor’s lesson”.

Of course. There are professors at Bellevue College with advanced degrees from great schools, including UW and Harvard.

There is no point in going into a ton of debt. Education is expensive in this country. I’m planning to go to a community college at first and then transfer to UW so I can save money. At a community college, you would be looking at a max of 3-4k/year, whereas the tuition at UW is 8k. That’s quite a difference for a person like me who will be paying for college out of his own pocket! :)

Thank you, everybody. Currently, after reading the course descriptions of the two colleges, I prefer UW. However, I don’t abandon WSUV. As for community college, since I have almost earned an associate degree through Running Start program, and there’s almost no further advanced classes I can take there, I will barely choose a community college. Still thanks.
