Im currently a junior in High School at a VERY competitive well known school in Illinois.
I have a 3.7 weighted gpa and a 3.4 unweighted
I got a composite score of 30 on my ACT 29E 31M 31R 28S and a 9 on writing
I’m currently in 1 AP class, but plan on taking about 4 more next year
Im a A-B student
I dealt with depression and anxiety during my sophomore year
I have been on the honor roll every year in high school
I founded and am president of the animal welfare club at my school. Im a student ambassador for the school and a peer helper, kind of like a one on one mentor. Im a studio helper in the after school photo studio and was a glass leader for 3 years for give a thin (a giant donation event in Dec). I have 300+ community service hours. I have interned at a political organization in my town and at the local vets office.
I’m Jewish (don’t really know if that helps)
I have talked to the admissions counselor at the UW a couple times and I am meeting with her one on one during my visit this spring break.
Also, because this is my dream school and if I get in I will 100% go, should I say that or somehow make that apparent to the admissions counselor when I meet with her?
Hello sbkorn28! I am so glad that you are interested in the UW, I knew I had to look at your stats when I saw you were interested in UW seattle. Let’s first look at the pros of your application. Founding a club looks wonderful on a transcript, so make sure to include that. You have much community service, which shows the College good things about you as a person. Student Ambassador/Peer tutor is wonderful too. Also, your ACT scores are good too. However, there are some cons. Your GPA is slightly below average, but if you can pull that up this semester + first semester senior year to a 3.6-3.7, that would be outstanding. Plus, UW will love to see an upward trend in your grades. Also, your class schedule doesn’t seem to be to rigorous this year. While it is great that you are challenging yourself in a subject is wonderful, but compared to others applying, it will be less than some. Now, this is assuming your school has 20+ AP. If your school only has 1 or 2 AP Classes for Juniors, that’s another story, and the UW will know about it. The only way you could talk about your depression and anxiety really is through your essay. If you can find a way to talk about how the depression and anxiety made you a better person, and can tie that in with all of your community service etc.
Overall, it is a low reach for you, but if you boost your grades and write a stellar essay, you may just be there in the fall
