UW vs. Northeastern vs. Cornell Transfer

I currently have 3 options right now (if my waitlists don’t pull through)

1.) Go to UW-Seattle (in-state) and attempt to pursue a degree in Stats, Psych, HCDE, or something in the Informatics school

Pros: cheap (~20k a year), in a city (preferred)
Cons: too close to home (literally 10 mins my house), might feel too much like an extension of high school, competitive capacity-constrained majors

2.) Go to Northeastern in Khoury and pursue a degree in CS + Cog Psych or something similar

Pros: in a new city, already admitted to preferred major, co-op emphasis
Cons: heard they have a 5-year emphasis, even with a merit scholarship it costs $45k to attend, which my parents do not think is worth it and thus aren’t super supportive, haven’t visited campus (but I have visited Boston)

3.) Take classes at the local CC over the summer, and then go to UW-Seattle for 1 year and take the courses to fulfill the transfer offer I was given by Cornell (if you know more about this, please let me know because I am so confused)

Pros: eventually go to Cornell (originally ED), parents are VERY supportive (go figure)
Cons: might have to spend an extra semester/summer to fulfill credits if I change majors, starting over as a transfer

I’m not completely sure about what I want to major in, but I know I want to go to grad school, so that should also be factored in.

Anything would be helpful. Thanks!

I’m in a super similar situation! Hm I’m probably going to go to Northeastern for a year (w scholarship) and if all goes well, transfer into Cornell. Idk about your major, but I heard that in general Cornell is a very transfer friendly school, so the transition shouldn’t be too crazy even if you were to go to another school (uw or cc or neu) your freshman year.

As for the transfer option, as long as you get meet a certain GPA requirement (usually in between 3.0 and 3.5) and take certain courses your freshman year, you’re pretty much guaranteed a spot. Again, I think the details differ depending on the major.

@aliens20: To which Cornell school were you guaranteed transfer admission? If you pursue this route, why do you connect it with taking classes in the upcoming summer?

@merc81 If I for some reason decide not to transfer/am unable to transfer to Cornell (Human Ecology), I would want to still be able to be competitive for my preferred majors at UW, which are all capacity-constrained. Thus, I could begin taking courses this summer to put towards a potential UW major, while at UW, I would fulfill the courses needed for my Cornell major (which has more of an emphasis in social sciences)

You can simply your decision at this time. If you attend either UW or Northeastern, the Cornell GTT program would be open to you if you meet its stated requirements.

It sounds like option 3 makes a lot of sense - no need to spend extra money for a school that doesn’t sound like it fits you. I would say that forming may be worth the extra cost going to UW in order to make UW different from high school and foster your independence a bit, especially if you don’t end up transferring to Cornell.
