Hey everyone,

So I have been admitted to both the University of Washington and the University of Michigan and it's been really difficult for me to choose between the two. I am out of state for both schools (I live in CA) and have not received any scholarship/financial aid at either. I want to go to medical school after undergrad and I plan to major in some sort of biological sciences at both schools. Both schools have amazing medical schools and a strong biology department so which of these two schools do you think would best prepare me to be admitted to a top medical school like (harvard, stanford, and etc..)???

Medical schools admissions are based largely on GPA, MCAT, and EC’s/jobs showing commitment to or interest in the medical field. They do not really consider your undergrad institution in the equation, and both UW and UM are fine schools. Given the high cost of medical school, I would choose whichever school costs less for you, and consider which environment will be more enjoyable. It snows a lot more in Ann Arbor, for instance, and it’s probably cheaper to fly/drive back and forth from Seattle to CA. Good luck! You can hardly go wrong with either choice.

would you even recommend that I attend a UC school that’s worse than the two schools as the best UC i got into was UCSB which I do not think is as strong as UM or UW in preparing me for medical school

UCSB is a fine university with excellent science programs. Many of my S14’s classmates here in WA applied there and several are going for various science majors! I think you would be well-prepared there and you sure would save money going in-state! The science and math courses you’ll need at all three universities are very similar. What really matters is how well you learn the material and how well you retain it later for the MCAT - you can do that equally well at all three.
