Which school is it easier to get in? I am international. Prospective major is either chemical engineering or biomedical engineering.

** My stats: **

SAT - 2360
GPA - 96/100
Rank - top 2%
School offers no AP/Honors

EC - lots of community service and lots of leadership positions; heavily involved in environmental stuff and publications/u; lots of awards for debate, but only school-wide; campaigns organization at my school

No sports, unfortunately.

Essays and Recs are good.

I would apply to both if I could. But Washington's application fee is $75 while Wisconsin's is only $44 + $10 for SAT scores. I like Wisconsin slightly*better overall, but I hate the weather. If I have a **really good* chance of getting in at Wisconsin, I won't apply to Washington anymore. It says in Washington's website that they accept around 50% ("half" as they say) of international applicants.

I think you will get into both schools with your stats. If you truly can not afford UWashington’s app. fee apply for a fee waiver, but I would not let that stand in the way of applying to both schools. Good luck!

If you are an international and you are concerned about the application fees, then I am concerned about whether you can afford either school if you get in (and I think your stats point to a very likely admit). You need to google the “Common Data Set” of every US school you are looking at and check the response to question H6. For both of these schools you will see that they checked the box that says “Institutional scholarship and grant aid is not available” for “undergraduate degree-seeking nonresident aliens”.

Can you afford these schools? You’ll be expected to show that you have the FULL funds in order to get accepted and to get your visa.

If affording either school is do-able, the apply to either school. They’ll both accept you, and neither is going to care what your EC’s are or aren’t.

You should understand that the U of Washington has a very strong international reputation among the emerging elite communities in the Pacific Rim, particularly. Therefore, competition for admission among international students is keen.
