Valedictorian, not ValedictorianS

Oh haha, none taken. I don't think I'd be as indignant if I cheated or played a game to get here.

A good idea for ranking is instead of taking weighted classes out of 4.5 or 5.0 or whatever, just adding a certain number, say .14 for each AP and .07 for each honors class taken to the UW GPA. That way taking more unweighted classes won't hurt you- it might even help you, since it might raise your UW GPA. Of course then there would be a limit on the number of classes you would take, something reasonable like 7.

This sort of happened to me. There were four of us my year (vs. 7 from the previous) but instead of one person giving the speech, nobody was allowed to since we had so many freakin' kids to hand out diplomas to.

Two of the people had gotten B's but still were up there and had higher overall GPA's than me. One took all honor's instead of AP. I got screwed by doing band for the first three years of HS. But I really only got mad about the kid with the honors classes up there since the other two kids were definitely really good students and I felt should be recognized. If they hadn't rounded to the tenth for the GPA, I wouldn't have even been up there since the three of them had higher overall weighted GPA's, even though I took more AP courses.

I totally agree with the OP for being upset. My sons school is weighted. He has been around 4.67 GPA, (#1 for all 4 years) for how ever long I can remember. This subject touches very close to my heart because we just came from his high school awards night and there were about 8-10 Valedictorians and a 'zillion' Salutatorians. Go figure! Any one 4.0 and above. Unbelievable! In mine and my sons opininions, it is not about the title, but the recognition. Every one getting the same little medal to wear around their neck at graduation? Not that I would suggest it to him, but I would toss it in the garbage and not wear it. I'm sorry for the rant, but it's been a tough year watching him work his a__ off and being disappointed in every direction (college admissions, etc...). I think I'm just extremely tired of the whole mess. I'm sooo glad it's over!!! For future Vali's: don't even bother!

wow these qualifications for Val sound really weird. and dumb. our school doesn't count in PE or electives such as band into your GPA and so doesn't matter for val or class rank =]

This doesn't happen at my school because the grades are out of 100, so its nearly impossible for 2 people to get exactly the same percentages, for weighting you just add 10% to your grade (eg. 75%-->83%, 90%-->99%, 100%-->110%), which is very unfair considering the average grade in the hardest class in our school (AP Eng Language) is a 70. The position of val has been abolished for every class after the class of 2009, but it is the most prestigious position, every year the val gets into an elite college. Last year it was Columbia, this year val and sal are going to Princeton and Yale (both excepted into Harvard, Yale, and MIT or Stanford).

We always have one... GPA is calculated, and then weighted exclusively. Nobody ever has a 4.0UW by graduation so that usually leaves one...

we have two. It's pretty annoying.

Plus the sal is actually #3, so it doesn't really make sense.
