Valedictorian vs Salutatorian

What are the roles of each of these positions in the graduating class? For example, any special speech, attire, etc? Where can I find great sample essays?

Salutatorian is usually “second place”, and gives the opening speech at graduation.
Valedictorian is usually “first place”, and gives the closing speech at graduation.

Sample essays for what? As in sample speeches?

At my school, valedictorian is anyone with a 4.0 so there are at least 10 of them. It’s no big deal considering the grades aren’t weighted.

Every school is different- you need to look at your website or ask someone for information. Our school has multiple Vals and sals and no one is required to give a speech. 2 are chosen

@awakeningvenus Yes, I should have clarified. I would like to find sample speeches given by valedictorians/ salutatorians.

I did not know each school has its own system; thanks for clarifying that guys!

My school only has one Val and Sal, but it’s also a school that usually has a graduating class of about 100 students, so in hindsight, my chances are pretty good. (I was number two in my class last year, but two students that transferred in sophomore year ended up having higher GPAs. cries)

@awakeningvenus Yup, that happens. My friend’s school is pretty small so while she should have been about 10 at my school, since she switched she ended up being valedictorian. Smart, huh? not really, haha

I like the small-school perks, honestly. I’m probably going to be beefing up my GPA as much as I can through AP classes to see if I can get to second by senior year. (I know for sure I can’t get first; I have a friend that has a 4.6 and we’re only Sophomores.)
