so my vice principal comes up to me and he tells me that i don’t give a speech for graduation. i personally don’t care that much but my parents really wanted me to and i dont want to let them down. is this normal? that doesnt even make sense in terms of latin. salu giving opening speeches and vale giving closing

Only val give speech at D's high school also.

I think a lot depends on how big your high school is, and how many students they have to get across that stage. By the way, they limit my D's speech to one minute!!!!! How much can you possibly say in 1 minutes?

sorry, D's high school? what's D's?

D's = Daughter's

Both the salutatorian and valedictorian make speechs at grad in my school, but we have <400 students in the entire high school.

I'm salutatorian in a class of 235- making a speech with the valedictorian.

I'm a junior right now and I'm probably going to be sal. I'm pretty sure that both val and sal give a speech at my school and we usually have 450+ kids in the senior class.

Our top 5 all speak at graduation.

Neither the salutorian or the valedictorian speak at our school. Basically, a principal years ago decided he hated how people played the "GPA game" (auditing unweighted classes, etc.) and made it so the graduation speaker auditions and is selected.

ahh i see.

Princeofnam- I defintately recommend that you find out if this is a new policy or if this is how it has been for a while. If the latter, there is nothing you can do about it. Sorry :(

The val, sal, and class speaker (number 3, me) speak at my school.

The Valedictorian, Salutatorian, Senior Class Council president, Executive Class Council president, and a few others that I can't remember all make speeches at our graduations. #3-5 have minor roles in graduation (pledge of allegiance, etc.). We're limited to 2 minutes apiece. Graduation takes less than an hour, and this year the graduating class has 536 seniors.

oh, i am the first class of my new high school to graduate. so its all good. i dont really want to do a speech and my mom didnt really care either when i told her

Our school has a nice little system to honor the top 5
5th - Master of Ceremonies at our annual schoolwide awards night
4th - Speaks at the luncheon honoring the top 10 and parents
3rd - Master of Ceremonies (I think?) at grad
2nd and 1st give speeches.
