Nothing
My guess is that they may also be pulling the apps of any students who’ve made their choice elsewhere. It’s a guess, but I’d like to think that those students who’ve been accepted to a preferred school would pull their applications elsewhere so others can have their own preferred school. So, maybe Vanderbilt waits until this late so they hopefully are looking at a pile of applicants that would be thrilled to be accepted and will be very likely to attend.
Wow guys this is about to be a rough Thursday
Could it not be on Wednesday?
@TwoHearted My husband (a Vandy alum) just toured Vanderbilt last week with our niece, and when they spoke with admissions, they said that 7% of the waitlist (over 100 kids) will be admitted to the freshman class. We are eagerly awaiting a decision for our HS senior daughter as well.
That is hopeful, @sandyi18 – though of course I’m mostly hoping for even happier news!
For what it’s worth, I just read that Vandy also has four separate wait lists, one for each college. I’d be curious how many they put on the Arts and Science list, and how many get in from that list. I’m sure they don’t make all that info public.
Anyway, let’s hope the answer comes soon, whatever it is! I’m thinking (based on no evidence at all) that it will be Wednesday afternoon.
@sandyi18 how could they know the percent they will take off of the waitlist? They won’t know that until they see how many kids accept their offer. Then then can tell how many spots they still have.
@homerdog Historically, they have taken 7-8% from the waitlist. Of course, this is not exact, but these schools have a pretty good handle on their yield each year. Some years surprise them (higher or lower yield from their admitted students), but for the most part, they know what’s going to happen
@luvlabs I do not think many kids pull their applications this early in the game - my son applied to 5 schools and has been accepted to 3 waitlisted at 1 and the last one we are waiting on is Vanderbilt - He has not pulled any applications from any schools yet - We need to see first if he is accepted to Vandy and what the financial aid package is - Uchicago and Johns Hopkins did not provide as much aid as we hoped so even if a child gets into their first choice, it is too soon to start pulling applications until they have time to consider ALL the offers
@yogadi and @LuvLABS I agree. My son has been accepted to three, wait-listed at one and will hear from four schools this week. Even though he has definitely eliminated one school he has not declined any admission offers yet - and won’t do so until he has all the admission offers and financial aid packages.
We are just whittling our thumbs over here waiting for this one. Can’t put things in order until we hear. Obviously can’t make travel plans for Nashville until we know. And can’t make plans to travel to more schools, either, until we hear from Vandy. So low fares getting snatched up each day while we sit here. Can you tell I’m losing it? Other schools on S19’s list had ED2 and they’ve all sent decisions.
And we will not do waitlist.
@yogadi would you share your son’s stats? My son was rejected at Johns Hopkins and waitlisted at UChicago. His stats were SAT 1510, M2-790, Bio 780, GPA UW3.83, W4.58 taking 4APs this year and last year and carrying an extra class both years. Captain of chess team, President Chess Club, Founder Peer Tutoring, Varsity Tennis Sophomore and Junior year, injured now. He is getting rejected and waitlisted a lot…so hard!
@yogadi @LuvLABS @FLBeachBaby Agree. Most will not pull out but does had scenario ranking from top to bottom.
I believe May 1 is not only for Students to decide but also for schools finalize admission as well.
We received 120K/4 yrs from a private school and 50K from other public school. We decide to decline 120K offer and had to answer few questions why. Funny things happened after declining, school is still auto send weekly reminders email and snail mail about mentor-ship, other scholarships to apply, still requesting us to register for fall new student event.
Good Luck everyone, we got our scenarios top to bottom list and by Thursday all things will be real clear.
@homerdog On the subject of airfares, consider Southwest if you live in a market they service. All fares are fully changeable without fee; if you pay cash, you only get an actual refund on the higher level fares, but you always get your money back in the form of a credit that you can use within one year of the original booking date. I share your dilemma with the travel plans. We are currently sitting on a number of booked flights that I will change as necessary. I do not work for Southwest, but I have found their policies quite useful in this process.
@yogadi @LuvLABS @FLBeachBaby @texaggie Have to add a dissenting opinion here. While I understand and respect that many need to evaluate all of their financial aid options before making a decision, I do have an issue with those who, once admitted to one or more preferred schools, don’t remove themselves from consideration from schools they absolutely know they won’t attend over the preferred regardless of aid. Your children could be waitlisted, or even rejected, at their desired schools for this exact reason. One student’s safety is another’s dream, so if you know you’re not going to attend, don’t make someone who truly wants to wait until May or later.
@CC1524 Yes, we’ll decline ASAP if we get accepted not remotely consider attending because FA reasons. I believe wait listed doesn’t go in effect until after May 1. Someone please correct me.
I can’t be worrying about rejected students because, we applied to 3 more colleges(4 total), that’s not fair to us or anyone.
Anyways, this is CC for that reason, thanks for your considerations and good luck.
@cc1524 someone’s being on a wait list (or being offered merit aid or financial aid) is not affected by another student holding out on an admission decision. The schools offer as much as twice as many students as the intended yield. Certainly no one is rejected from a school because another student accepted. And if a student declines an offer, it will have absolutely zero impact on a rejected applicant. Decision Day is May 1 - no need to feel forced to make a decision until that time. Even the colleges inform waitlisted students (my son is one) that any possibility of offer from the wait list won’t come until late May at the soonest.
I agree with everything you said. SWA has a lot of flights to Nashville and they are reasonably priced. Purchasing or using FFMiles early works great - I called in for clarification and the SWA agent said, “You can cancel your flight 10 minutes prior to boarding and you FFMs will be credited back to you.”
@tsm529 My son has similar stats: 35 act, 1550 SAT,800 math 2, 760 chem, 4.0 unweighted, 12 AP classes (in all contents including Calc BC and Physics C with mostly 5s and lowest a 4. In at 3 schools, rejected from MIT and Northwestern. Waiting on 4 schools including Vanderbilt this week.
My son also has similar. 36 composite ACT. 800’s on SAT Math and science section tests. Scores of 5 on all AP taken. MIT XC coach refered him to admissions. Community leader at school. State champion scholar bowl.
MIT: No
NW: No
Rice announces today
Columbia and Vanderbilt later this week.
This is challenging!
