@Itiznotfare I was already rejected from my first choice school at Vandy. Application was tailored to that, not to the College of Arts and Sciences.

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I don’t think that the Vanderbilt application offered a way for me to showcase my strong passion for education and interest in human development. Peabody was a fit for me I think.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: Valpo, Butler, UIndy, Spring Hill, Adelphi, Rutgers, University of San Francisco
Rejected: UChicago, Pomona, Northwestern, Vanderbilt
Awaiting: Georgetown (deferred EA), Harvard, Baylor, Tulane (deferred)
This whole process has been really disheartening to be honest. I’m a dedicated, strong student and I really wanted to get into the schools of education at either NU or Vanderbilt. I am very interested in education policy and reform, and want to declare pre-law.
I know I am a very lucky student, as 30 minutes north of my location is inner city, where students have not gotten new textbooks in 30 years, special needs students are further disadvantaged, and they can’t keep teachers and school officials for a long time. But, my literally passion is education reform and fighting for the rights and opportunities of students because some students are truly not guaranteed equal opportunity.
However, rural students are at a disadvantage as well. My school is trade oriented, so students are not properly prepared for college. We are discouraged from taking a 4th year of a world language because “it’s not needed for college”. My school cut three of my classes from my senior schedule (AP Research, AP Spanish Lang, AP European History), so that is why my senior schedule is the way it is. I do not want to sound whiny, but how do I get over this? I have truly done all I possibly can but my school is simply not adequate for advanced students. This is one of the main reasons why I’m interested in education policy, because I’ve become such a sad person because of the cards I’ve been dealt. I’ve seen the failures of the American school system. I hope this doesn’t sound stupid, I just really cannot stand the fact that I stressed myself out the past 4 years just to attend a school I truly don’t want to? What do I do?
@LyfeWater - bloom where you are planted.
I was accepted, but I’m super concerned about financial aid. Apparently I would have to pay over 60k per year??? I don’t mean to sound ungrateful but how am I possibly supposed to put down a quarter of a million dollars to go to a school? Even a school as great as Vandy doesn’t seem worth it. Any advice?
Admitted!

@LyfeWater you’ve applied to extremely competitive schools and with each being a 10-15% accept rate, it’s unpredictable for kids with even higher stats than yours. You’re an amazing candidate! Your school list seems like either safety or reach - I didn’t see the U Richmond (as an example) level schools. You’ve got some great options - I know many people in the NYC business world who went to U Indiana and have done extremely well in life! Good luck with the rest of your news. You’ll do really well at one of your schools- also it’s also Waaaayyyy easier to get into top schools as a transfer, while not ideal could be an option.
@southbound? It was really hard to choose which schools to apply to, I applied to free ones I was interested in, or I emailed schools explaining my situation (I don’t qualify for waivers but have no $/no parent support) I paid for Georgetown, Vanderbilt, and Pomona by myself, and with no source of income during that time, it was savings. Other schools declined giving me a fee waiver so I had to give up on applying to those. I think IU’s Kelley would be good for public policy, but I don’t really like the environment of IU. I’m going to have to cut my losses. Indiana (and I’m sure other states but I have no idea) has a “pathway” I guess, I forget what it’s called, where participating colleges (and all state schools) must enroll the student as a sophomore if they have completed the credits through Indiana’s community college. I only need 2 more classes (6 credit hours) and I will have completed my gen ed for Valpo. I’m leaning towards going to Valpo for my first year and then applying to transfer to Kelley. It seems like that is my best bet.

I’m just more upset at the fact that I did what I did at a rural school, and could have blossomed had I lived maybe 8 miles north. At my school you either enter a trade (great pathway for some students but that’s not my cup of tea) or you figure everything out on your own because guidance and administration cares more about the trade programs than academia.
