Vanderbilt Chance

Hello, I am a Canadian who is applying to US college. I was wondering if I have chance of going to Vanderbilt (by ED 1) with SAT super-score of 1970. Currently, I have GPA of 3.8 out of 4.
bb2mom, your d has a very strong chance at vanderbilt ed. based on your stats she seems to be well rounded, just what they’re looking for! my d2 was accepted to vanderbilt ed last year with 3.93GPA and 34 ACT. she was president of 2 clubs and vp of an national honor society. I wish your daughter the best of luck! (mine is having the time of her life!! and i hope that your daughter will too)

BB1: Your daughter has a strong resume. Big pluses:

GPA, rank
From New Jersey
ED 1

I agree. I would be very surprised if she is rejected. BB2mom, you gotta be proud of your daughter. By the way, I once lived in NJ for a year or so, and wonder how Vanderbilt is recognized there by top students these days.

Is vanderbilt easier to get into from northern states?

I don’t know that it’s easier to get into Vanderbilt if you’re from the east coast than from another region, but what IS true is that an east coast kid is more likely to get into Vandy than another top-20 school that’s closer to home. That’s because the highest ranked schools in our area, including the Ivies, get inundated with applications from amazingly qualified east coast kids, especially from around NY. That makes the competition really fierce, because these schools want geographic diversity. So, a kid from a NY public high school with a 2400 SAT and top 5% ranking is very likely to get into Vanderbilt, whereas Columbia or Brown will still be tough. That same kid, coming from Tennessee, would be far more interesting to Columbia or Brown.

Vanderbilt’s profile on the east coast is definitely on the rise, but at this point it doesn’t compare to “local” schools or Duke’s. When I say my son goes to Vanderbilt there are still people who say, “Oh, interesting. Where is that?” and “is he the only northerner?” They’re surprised when I tell them his class is only about 1/3 southern and that Vanderbilt is really a national school now. (Fortunately, graduate schools and employers DO recognize what it means to have a Vanderbilt diploma!) But this “advantage” isn’t going to last, thanks to Vanderbilt’s increasing status.

thanks for the info…i am very proud of all of her work…but very nervous for her…no one from our high school really goes to vandy…none in last 5 years …one has gotten in…only 5 or so apply each year…more popular with NY and northern NJ…and i agree with @goodenoughparent people are like “vanderbilt ?, where what is that?” they obviously do not know much!

We’re in New England and I actually it seems like a lot of people DO know where Vanderbilt is. I actually always make a point of saying, he goes to school in Nashville, to Vanderbilt, but most people seem to know where it is already and usually say they know someone who went there.

BB2mom, I guess it is a plus to your daughter that her high school hasn’t applied much to Vanderbilt. As I and others said above, she is a strong candidate. But Vanderbilt is a reach school for practically everybody these days. Best wishes, and please let us know the result.

I agree Vandy is now a reach for even well qualified students.
zuzza, not enough info to go with
bb, your D sounds like the type of student Vandy likes…excels in and out of the classroom with CS.
Good luck
