D is interviewing this weekend. D is really torn between Tulane and Vandy but felt ED1 at Vandy was the best route. RD admit rate is scary low. Ideally would like to compare aid from both (if offered acceptance of course)
@FrothyShake wow, those seem like 2 entirely different schools - atleast academically. The admit rates for both are very different as well as the selectivity. Does your D have other schools that she likes similar to Vandy?
@LvMyKids2 To me, it may be more difficult to get into Vandy than Tulane, but the schools are actually quite similar in many respects.
@pantha33m would love to hear how you think so? Definitely not on academics!
Both are medium-sized private universities in attractive, social Southern cities. Both have highly regarded professional schools. Both have good, not great, D1 sports programs and a fairly robust Greek scene. Both are known for a good balance of social life and studying and a generally happy, well-rounded and engaged student body. Both seem to be well-run and institutionally sound.
Not 100% sure what you mean by “academics” as it relates to undergraduates. My view is that, at least in the top 100 universities, the quality of jnstruction is high and academics are good if a student chooses to take advantage of them.
Vanderbilt is much harder to get into and more prestigious so I think it’s safe to say that its students generally have higher test scores and high school GPAs.
Regardless, my kid is applying ED to Vandy and EA to Tulane and would be happy at either.
@LvMyKids2 No doubt VU is higher ranked, more prestigious, etc.but she is trying to determine best fit. It’s not all about academics. I graduated from Vandy and my wife has two degrees from Vandy. We know the school. She is also looking at UNC, UVA, Emory, Wake, et al. They are different but not dramatically as you say.
@FrothyShake I agree with the ones you just listed above. They r similar. Still don’t see Vandy and Tulane. I see Vandy more in line with UNC uva. I agree on fit. My child turned down an Ivy for a non Ivy. All based on fit. Good luck.
I just had my interview today and It went so well
pantha33m you are so wise to have a positive outlook on your financial and academic “safety” admission at Tulane. Many students over the years have applied to both Vandy and Tulane among other “usual suspecxts” and have opted to take generous merit offers at Tulane. Depending on your projection of the long term costs of your education, many students would rather arrive in a professional graduate school debt free. The trick is to stay at the head of the class, take up your university with a great attitude and push yours to do well on the next round of qualifying grad school exams.
anyone else applying to Peabody ? or from Nashville ?
@blissblessed How did it go? What kind of questions did they ask you? I have my interview today and I am very nervous!
I applied to Peabody, what major did you apply under?
@htyt3bre I applied for secondary education ! I haven’t decided my second major for that yet … right now I’m leaning towards History or English…
@livlaughlove101
hey!! sorry for the late reply. how did yours went? overall mine did not feel like an interview but rather felt like i was talking to my dad or something hahaha. He told me about his experience and his favorite part of vandy… he asked few questions like “why do you like vandy” or “are theres anything you want me to add on to the evaluation sheet that you didn’t have a chance to say on your application”. overall it was very chill
@guevarajuice @htyt3bre I’m applying for secondary ed too! History or English for me as well. Have either of you interviewed?
@annabel101 I interviewed yesterday ! I think it went really well, it was really comfortable and casual. :~) My interviewer works in Steinhardt as a program director so we got to talk a bunch about how their program compares to CAS and such , it was really nice. :’^)
^^^ I 800% meant to write Peabody … not Steinhardt omg
On interview request #3… no response and it’s been 10 days. At least they should be able to see my interest according to my request history?
@edc123 Don’t give up! Make sure to try people outside of your immediate area. I spent 1 hour+ putting in various zip codes to find people who’ll be more responsive. You might have the best luck with retirees. If you don’t get a response after 2 days or so, move on. You can cover more ground that way.
Our last try for an interview said no. And then it was past the deadline. Not sure why they didn’t remove their name from the list if they were going to say no.
