Vanderbilt Prestige

Just wondering what you guys think of Vanderbilt's prestige around the country... Is it in the same convo as some of the lower ivies? Is it as well thought of as a school like Johns Hopkins, U Chicago, Duke? Let me know, thanks.

I just got into Duke and Dartmouth as a xfer, and I’m still waiting to hear back from Vandy. Guess who no longer cares anymore?

(Ya dig?)

easy there slugger…

anyone else share this transfer student’s sentiment?

Oh, are you offended? Recalibrate your social barometer.

You asked a question that I’m in a pretty good position to answer, given that I now have to choose between a ‘lower’ Ivy and Duke, one of the schools you listed, versus the school you’re inquiring about.

In terms of prestige, it’s not even close. In terms of educational quality, a completely different story. But that’s not what you asked about, was it?

Yeah. I’d put it below all the schools you mentioned. For me, it’s a peer of schools like Notre Dame, Georgetown, UMich, UVA, and possibly Emory.

not offended at all. i go to Vanderbilt, and by the look of it you seem pretty resentful towards the school. whats with this “ya dig?” nonsense and saying that “in terms of prestige, it’s not even close.” Come on brotha

well for example Cornell is 14th and Brown was ranked 16th by USNWR while Vanderbilt is 18th… id say thats pretty comparabale, no?

“Ya dig?” = “Catch my drift?”

And in terms of prestige- again, what you asked about- it’s not, really. It has a strong regional rep, but outside of its sphere of influence, people aren’t going to be ‘wowed’ at cocktail parties. THAT list is pretty short, and Vanderbilt isn’t quite on it. (If you’re talking quality, it’s definitely up there, though.)

I’m not resentful of Vanderbilt at all- where’d you get that from? All I said was that I was still waiting for their decision, but that I don’t really care about the outcome anymore, since I wouldn’t choose it over the two other places I’ve been admitted- each of which were on your ‘compare list’.

Now if I hadn’t gotten into those two places, I would be eagerly waiting to hear back from V-bilt, as I would pit it up against my UVa acceptance.

fair enough my man. and congrats on your acceptance to those schools, well done. let me pose this: how does vandy compare to schools like notre dame or georgetown?

cheers

Prestige has a lot to do with reputation, which has a lot to do with exposure. So tough call, but I still say no. ND is famous for being ‘Team Catholicism’ and a traditional football powerhouse- Georgetown for being the best school in the capital of the world and a traditional basketball powerhouse.

Vandy just doesn’t have a lot of those types of exposure or recognition. Academically, it lives in the shadows of the Ivies, Stanford/MIT/CalTech/Duke/Berkeley/UVA/G-town/ND/etc. Athletically, its a perennial cellar-dweller in the SEC. So I just think it gets overshadowed, as far as ‘schools people talk about’. I think it suffers the same reputational fate as Wash U, which is the PROTOTYPE for underrated schools- amazing programs, smart kids, massive endowment, and still… no one’s heard of it outside of St. Louis!

Vanderbilt also caters to the more “Southern” type of student as well. Though Rice, Emory, and Duke are all in the south, they carry very Northern vibes while at Vandy you can see guys suited up and girls in sundresses wearing pearl necklaces at the football games. It’s definitely a great school, but in the South I’d say that the best schools in order are Duke, Rice, and then Emory/Vanderbilt.

I would not say it is on par with Georgetown or Notre Dame.

Whenever someone mentions Vanderbilt, I immediately think of a heavy party and drinking school where Greek life and frat brahs rule all. That’s not to say Vandy sororities can’t be as vicious and intense as well (vicious in a sense of inducing eating disorders and hugely basing on physical appearance and family pedigree). I can’t really come up with a specific department where Vanderbilt is absolutely stellar.

^ Then you have never heard of the world renown Peabody College of Education at Vanderbilt University…

1 School of Education, take that Stanford and Columbia!

IMHO, Vandy is a great school, excellent education, hot chicks, fun parties, prestige, very rich, white, preppy. It caters to the South like Hotasice said…

I personally believe it can rival Duke for ‘Hahvahd of the South’. It’s a great school.

i dont think it’s on the same level as WashU in terms of being overlooked. i definately would agree with you that it does live up to the hype of being very waspy, preppy, big partying ,etc. i think it caters to very well rounded individuals, very social yet very very smart.

and I believe that Vanderbilt caters to more than just southern kids…im from california

I think Vanderbilt is definitely a good school, however, it’s not mentioned with the same prestige as with the lower ivies from where I live.

vandy comes off as a school that is considered fairly prestigious but mostly due to its rich (i couldn’t get into a better school) aura type thing. it kind of has the same thing as duke and nyu. good-not really that great- but for some reason is considered better than it is. just my opinion

haha you may be right about that “rich” thing… for example i got into cornell, uchicago, WUSTL, to name a few higher ranked schools but chose Vandy. i made the right choice, because those schools dont have the social side of college i wanted…

I’d put Vandy alongside Emory, Tufts, Georgetown, UVA.

those are good schools…

No one in my school applied to Vanderbilt nor did anyone even think about applying there. However, Vanderbilt is equal in academics when compared to the schools slipper1234 listed (except UVA, I don’t know WHY people think UVA is even close compared to these schools…although I do agree that UVA is probably the best public school).

Don’t get me wrong, Vanderbilt is a very good school, just not as well renown as others. I guess you could call it a hidden gem.

Also, Vanderbilt is known as the “Harvard of the South” (Though I don’t exactly agree with it since I AM a bit biased) according to urban dictionary (the definition is a bit R-rated FYI). Urban Dictionary: Harvard of the South;
