Vanderbilt vs Davidson

Hi all,

Deciding between Davidson and Vandy for next year. I'll probably be studying something along the lines of math and econ, my favorite subjects. Career-wise, I'm actually very interested in medicine, but I could also see myself trying to pursue something in equity/business instead.

I'd love to hear people's opinions on this. Thanks for the advice!

Vandy. More well known both in and outside the South.

you can’t go wrong with either college. Davidson is intense with a great deal of daily homework and close contact with faculty members who know when you don’t come to class and seek you out. They have comparable rigor as colleges. They have comparable students with Vanderbilt perhaps having test score higher stats and lower admission rates.

Vanderbilt has a great deal more money to offer merit and need aid but Davidson also offers no loan packages to lucky admittees.

Choose your own adventure. Vanderbilt is uber more stimulating and busy with grad schools and a good medical college on grounds. The Commons is the size of Davidson including the reality that the freshman class at Vanderbilt is the size of Davidson entirely.

You will have a larger name recognition and alum network from Vanderbilt but in my opinion, Davidsonians are respected where they work and where they land greatly because Davidsonians are students who chose a rigorous and principled education.

Choose where you can learn the most. Vanderbilt is for self starters and fragility there is not a good thing. Everyone was a tip top student. You will attend some classes where you won’t know your professor although we have been super pleased with the quality of personal access to faculty for our Vandy sophomore. Vandy does function like Davidson in many classes and in part of every day but it is NOT Davidson re intimacy. My son enjoys the mix of anonymity and intimacy at Vanderbilt.

If you have no money diff to concern yourself with…give your heart to either Davidson or Vandy and give either school 100%…because you will have to do this at either school to do well. Pick your emotional fit. Our son had both admissions and chose Vanderbilt with Nashville itself being part of the final draw but he is from a boring home city and Nashville is part of his learning laboratory.

Davidsonians do very well in grad and med school applications although you won’t have an on grounds hospital and the access to many places to intern in Nashville is more convenient in Nashville with Vandy’s close to town location. I have never met a Davidson grad I didn’t admire. But my son is enjoying the larger more fluid peer group at Vandy.

Choose your social emotional fit! Congrats on your wonderful choices.

I had to make the same decision two years ago too, I chose Vandy over Davidson, never regretted it. The only problem is that the 2 intro classes in econ are slightly on the larger side here, can’t be helped however. That said, class size shrinks dramatically after – I have had a class with 8 students and a professor + his TA. Wonderful times.

Class with 8-12 students are very, very common at Davidson. :)

And we don’t have TAs
