Variations in Weighting

I have read a lot of threads on CC regarding GPAs and weighting. I am a little uncertain how that factors into admissions. It seems maybe southern schools have a higher weighting?

I am looking into nursing and a lot of schools publish average admitted GPAs of like 4.4. That isn’t feasible in my school even with all As in APs.

My school uses more NGA than GPA but they do convert.

My UW NGAs GPA equivalent = 3.979
My W NGA GPA equivalent = 4.112

I feel like the 4.11 seems low for 8 honors classes and 2 APs (through junior year)

I am hoping the upward trend in my grades is helpful.
I had (weighted) 95.2 freshman, 97.2 sophomore, and 103.1 junior year

Thanks for any input or explanation of how that all works out.

Don’t worry about weighting. High schools weight differently – and some HS don’t weigh GPA at all. Your guidance counselor will send a school profile along with your transcript which explains to the college admission officer the weighting system used in your HS (among other things such as the levels of classes offered etc.) so your GPA will be viewed in the proper context.

What @happy1 said. Your GPA will be evaluated in the context of your school. Look at page 2 of the Common App form: Salesforce

One of the Collegekids went to a college where the “average” GPA of admitted students was higher than it was possible to achieve at their HS

Admissions officers need to be familiar with how GPAs are calculated, and each high school’s profile should explain the process, as well as the range for students. Part of their job is to normalize all of this data to evaluate all students on an equal basis, to the extent possible.

Some schools will take your transcript and re-calculate a GPA in a standardized manner. Those who don’t still effectively do this, just not formally.

It’s nice to understand the variations but there’s really nothing you can do, other than trust that AOs know what they’re doing and you’ll be evaluated on a fair basis with other applicants.

(fwiw, my D currently has a 5.08 wGPA from her school. She’s not de facto “better” than everyone who can’t possibly exceed something in the mid-4s. Iirc, students in SC can be up to, or in, the 6’s)

The college may be using its own recalculation. Unfortunately, most colleges which recalculate are not very transparent about how they recalculate (California publics are an exception).

Thanks everyone for the reassurance!!
