Various Questions About Transferring Out of a 4-Year Institution in California

Hey guys, I’ve got a few questions regarding the transfer process.

I am currently a sophomore at Santa Clara University, a private 4-year institution located in NorCal. I’m looking to transfer out as a Fall 2018 transfer. I’ve been looking at a number of different schools, a few of which being UCs (not looking to transfer to UCLA or Berkeley). My school runs on a quarter system so I have two more quarters (winter and spring) before finishing sophomore year. Therefore, it means that I’ll be a junior transfer correct? I was wondering what the likelihood of being accepted to UCs such as UCI, UCD, UCSB as a transfer from an in-state private institution? Obviously I’ve read about UCs heavily prioritizing transfers from CCCs, so are all other institutions treated the same despite being in-state? Lastly, is the transfer process similar to applying out of high school where you apply for multiple UC campuses through one application? FYI, I realized I messed up and should’ve decided to apply last November since if I apply this year that means I’ll have to take a gap year…or does it not work like that?

If the UCs don’t work out, I’m still planning on applying to other colleges through Common App. Since most deadlines for Fall 2018 transfers are coming up in the next few months, I was wondering what if by the time I send in transfer apps I am not yet at junior standing? aka I don’t have 90 quarter units completed. It’ll take me until the end of sophomore year, maybe even summer classes to have 90 units, and that’s IF all my classes are transferable, which is quite unlikely. Will I be considered as a sophomore transfer or does it completely not work at all?

Sorry for the long post, but I really need some advice. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

anyone??

You are a sophomore now. You will be a junior transfer provided you do finish out your full year.

Check the websites of the places you want to apply to for the application cut-off dates for transfers. If you can’t find the information you need, contact the transfer admissions offices and ask. If you have no problem with starting during the summer term, or for winter/spring quarter/semester, get the application cut-off dates for those as well. You might like a gap year, but there is no need to assume that a full year off will be necessary if you have missed the cut-off date for fall.

Transfers apps are based primarily on grades at current college. What is your GPA? UC also requires a certain GPA in major classes for impacted majors.

Sure, UC will be happy to read your application, but they’ll be looking for a good reason to transfer. UC does post average stats of transfers on their website by intended major so you can check it out.

Why would you take a gap year off just to apply to UC next fall? There is no guarantee that with a gap year that you will be accepted to a UC other than Merced.

What is it that you dislike about SCU? What are you seeking in a college experience?
