Hi all! I come from a small high school in northern Wisconsin. I’ve played on our girls’ ice hockey team since freshman year, and my family is moving to a larger town and I’ll be starting classes at my new school during spring semester of this year (my junior year). Because it is a larger, more competitive team, I would likely be bumped down to junior varsity team (I started playing hockey only two years ago and am not experienced in the least compared to other girls). How would this affect and look on a college application (being bumped down from varsity to junior varsity)?
It will have zero impact on a college application.
Go ahead and go on the team that is more appropriate for your level. Colleges like to see participation and involvement. It won’t matter that you switched from Varsity to JV.
Who knows…you might even end up with a great essay here. You are doing something you love enough to “drop down” a level in the name of the team. Changing schools might give you a good essay idea too.
Good luck!
