(Future sophmore)
I have the (mutually exclusive due to scheduling constraints) options between playing varsity field hockey for my school next year or having an internship with my representative in Congress. Which one would be more conducive to HYPSC?
I'm not sure how important this is, but it's our school's first year having a field hockey team so everyone who signs up automatically gets onto varsity, even people who have no experience like me (decreases merit of activity maybe?? haha idk it'd be nice to have some perspectives on this)
Also, almost all of my other ECs are revolved around politics/ public policy so would it be better or worse for me to do something outside of that arena? (well-rounded vs angular application???)
Final note: If I choose to do the internship, I have to first apply, meaning that there's a very possible chance that I might get rejected. By that time, the field hockey season will have already started. I will probably end up joining mock trial if this happens.
*side note: the internship is unpaid
My kid did an internship for a member of Congress. She answered phones, updated a database of mentions of the senator in media, and gave Capitol tours. Honestly – it was scut work compared to her internship at another DC agency where she did real work with real responsibility. I’d play field hockey (and colleges don’t know how many kids go out for a team).
Go with field hockey, because you have the possibility of getting rejected at the internship. Can you apply to the internship and see if you’d get in first while playing FH?
