I've heard some mixed reviews about the program. Can someone help me out? How competitive is it? How much work is it? How good is the education/medical school in terms of learning?

I’ll give you my two cents, because I interviewed there and was waitlisted (top 5 on the waitlist, although I never tried to find out if I got in after that because I committed to VCU’s GMED program).

From going to the interview, there were two things that annoyed me. First, if you are an out of state student, you will not get any scholarships whatsoever (they told me that at the interview). So, you’re looking at about 50-60k for each of the first 2 years and 60-70k for each of the second 2 years. (we weren’t told about the last 2 years for some reason). Second, there was no WOW factor in the school, you know what I mean? It was just another medical school (my opinion, of course).

And if you factor in the low rank of the undergraduate school and the lack of a rank for the medical school, I would say that this program is not exactly the best for you, especially if you are out of state (if you are in state or within the region, that’s a different story).

Just my two cents. Hope this helped!

Your education is what you make of it.
There is near concensus that UMKC is or is at the bottom of the combined programs.
Lasting only six yrs, it is rushed. Students do subpar on the standardized tests.
Having said that, the recent Match results were exemplary. There were ENT, Ophth, Neurosurg, Rad/Rad Onc etc.
The one graduate I worked with, would have done well anywhere.
At least, consider this program as your safety school, if you can afford it. Also consider UMKC only if medicine is what you want. The structure does not allow you to switch major or transfer easily.

Thanks. Your advice is helpful.
