VCU Guaranteed Medical Program

How many people are applying this year? I'm a Virginia Resident. Sent my application in last week.

Let's do stats or something, because I sort of want to know what my competition is and I'm guessing a lot of other people do as well.

SAT Score:
GPA:
Class Rank (out of?):
SAT II's:
ACT:
EC's:
Essay Strenght:
Teacher Rec's:
Hospital Hours:
VA Resident?:

Add some more if you think of any

Here are mine :)

165 Hours to date (Yes very low...:()
VA Resident

Apparently for this program, you’re supposed have 350 hours of medical related community service(volunteering) to apply. Hopefully for you that isn’t the case. Good Luck!

You’re not “supposed” to have any amount of hours, as there is no requirement.
The AVERAGE however is around 300 hours.

That means that there were definitely kids who had less than 300 hours.

Your stats look good to me…give it a shot!

here are my stats:

SAT Score: 1930 (the worst part of my app)

GPA: UW: 4.2; W: 5.01 (I think I was 8th in my class, so yes very competitive school)

Class Rank (out of?): 8th

SAT II’s: Math I: 790 US History: 730 Chem: 720

ACT: -----

EC’s: Research for 4 years of High School (at VCU apparently)
Founder of 2 clubs
inducted into all the honors societies at my school

Essay Strength: pretty strong essays (my ap teacher and friends loved them)
Teacher Rec’s: 1 from my AP Bio teacher, 1 from AP Chemistry teacher, 1 counselor

Hospital Hours: over 700 hours…including research, shadowing and volunteering (this is pretty stellar)

VA Resident?: yep :)

It’s a little frustrating that many of these programs give preference to in state students, even if those out of state students may have higher credentials than the in state ones. Oh well, apply widely everyone!

I don’t they give much precedence to those students that have taken SAT ii’s as opposed to those who haven’t, because they said SAT ii’s are irrelevant on the seminar that I attended. Here are the stats of my sister, who is applying this year:

SAT Score: 2100 (1330 CR+M)
GPA: 3.81
Class Rank (out of?): 36/567
SAT II’s: Biology E (640) Biology M (710) US Hist (730) Lit (710)
ACT: Didn’t take it
EC’s: Founder/president of 4 clubs, leadership in 5, involved in 7
Essay Strenght: Could’ve been a LOAD better…
Teacher Rec’s: 1 From AP Biology Teacher, 1 from Gifted, and 1 from Club Sponsor
Hospital Hours: 560
VA Resident?: YES!

SAT II scores arent looked at by VCU

to bsmd11
VCU does not have any preference for its GMED program…in fact i know many students from out of state and even out of country who are going to this program. plus the ones getting into the programs definitely have better credentials than the ones rejected no matter whether they are in-state or out of state students and they have made it clear that admissions into GMED program does not solely depend on numbers (gpa, sat etc)…

clocksay, VCU is open about the fact that they take in-state students over all others.

There’s a clear precedence given to in-state students. I’ve lived in VA my entire life, and this has always been the trend.

Of the four seminars I’ve attended, they’ve always told the VA kids that we have an advantage over OOS because of our residence.

Your facts are obviously incorrect because over 70% if the inductees are Virginia residents.

However, residence can only get you so far! The majority of applicants are also VA residents.

perhaps i didn’t make myself clear…vcu does have preference for in-state students when talking about regular undergraduate admissions…but for GMED, which is what we are talking about in this thread, they do not discriminate…yet again preference for in-state students for undergraduate…but no preference for instate for GMED…go actually talk to people who are in this program and you’ll know…just don’t assume

Of course I am not assuming clocksay… I actually read the information given on the website, which I will quote below (don’t forget to READ the entire thing before making assumptions):

I hope you noticed what you were supposed to. There is a preference for in-state students… just don’t assume.

I’m not assuming…I’ve attended 4 different GMED conferences and all of them said that they prefer IN-STATE students…

I’m not sure where you live, but I’ve had access to these programs my entire life, and I’m very familiar with them.

I don’t know many other GMED or BS/MD programs that well, but I am very well-versed on VCU.

And bsmd, thanks for that quote, helps in clearing up things.

okay if this were really true then there wouldn’t have been 6 out of state students and 2 canadian students into this program for the 2008 year i.e. the year my cousin got into this program…obviously they state that residency status matter but the difference is not substantial (8 out of 20 students are out of virginia…thats a lot)…and i live in virginia and i’ve been affiliated with VCU through my research throughout my high school…so its not that i’ve been living in dark when it comes to VCU

6 OOS? I don’t know where you’re getting this information…but you might want to call them and get their statistics. It’s almost always a 2/3 from VA and 1/3 from OOS…VCU is a public state school, they obviously favor IS students.

I’m not saying they don’t EVER take any OOS students, they have to take OOS students, who often have much better stats than IS students. It’s just that, like UVA & VTech (I’m assuming you’re knowledgeable on both of those), VCU favor IS Students.

^Exactly my point as well.

lets not worry if they prefer in/out of state students
which one of you got interviews and when did you choose yours?
