Vehicles on Campus at UF

Hey everyone I'm wondering about the pros and cons of having a vehicle on campus at the University of Florida. Is it worth it? I am a transfer student and will hopefully have an off campus job. I know you have to register you vehicle and such. What's the process exactly? Should I bother?

If you work off campus you will probably want a car.
Parking close to your dorm may not be an option however since parking on campus is very tight. Most students use bikes or walk to get around. There are also campus busses and students can also ride city busses. Small scooters are also popular.

I am starting in the Fall as Freshman and I am taking my car. I will park in student parking and use it when I need it.

If I ever decide to go to the beach on the weekends I want to be able to go. Plus I am going to be on the UF Sailing team and practice is at Lake Wauberg which is south of G’ville.

My friend is graduating and he said if you come from a big city like we do… you will WANT your car. Some people get by because they are not used to it…

Thanks everyone, you were really helpful!

If you have a car, good luck finding a spot and making it to class on time. You’re better off walking or biking.

If you have a bike, it’s the cheapest way to get around and its not that bad. But when I did this it was during the summer and it got old. You see half the campus is uphill so going to class was a struggle (from Hume) but coming back was a blast and refreshing.

If you are walking, get your parents to buy a $50 bike. 'nuff said.

THE BEST OPTION:

If you have a scooter, parking is very easy and you’ll get to class on time without sweating. Having a scooter at UF is not gay but sort of stylish. Decent scooters are usually $400-600 on craigslist and they are a huge help if you also have a job up here. Also you don’t need a motorcycle license to ride one and they are very simple to operate and maintain.

If you got a motorcycle license without telling your parents like me then you’re in for a treat. Not only do you get the benefits of scooter parking, you get to ride in style. There’s an MSF course right in gainesville so this was easy for me.

@Orange!..Blue!: Actually, to get around campus I plan on using my rollerblades. I wasn’t looking to use my car to drive around campus and get to classes. I was more wondering how you keep your vehicle up there (parking/does it need to be registered, etc) so that I can get to and from work as I will most likely be transferring from my store here to one near campus in G’ville. Plus like gator4ever said I will prefer to have some beach weekends.

Ok well in that case you just buy buy a decal at the parking & trans building and you can keep your car in one of the parking garages and/or parking spaces around campus. I think it costs about $100 per semester or maybe less.

I’ve seen a few people roller skate and a lot of people have long boards which are pretty cool as well.

Also parking is easier after 5pm on most days except game days.
