I noticed on the OIT page of the AU website that American offers “enhanced service” with “participating providers” which seem to include Sprint and AT&T but not Verizon. I also noticed my Verizon phone didn’t have a signal in the lower level of the SIS building (I had service in the Katzen Center, didn’t check in the other buildings).

We’re on a family plan with Verizon that has a lot of really nice features–e.g., it doesn’t cost anything to call from our cell phones to our house land line, which seems like that would be a common scenario once my kid is at AU.

Anyone have any experience with Verizon service on campus? I would prefer not to switch.

Does it occasionally get annoying? Yes. Is it worth changing your plan? Not at all.

I have Verizon, it works perfectly everywhere on campus except the basement of the SIS building, and the lounges of Anderson. Quite literally every other building on campus has between 2 and 5 bars for Verizon users. Frankly the only reason I’m ever in the basement of the SIS building is once a week for an hour long meeting, and so it really wasn’t worth changing my plan.

Furthermore, Verizon is the only service provider that works underground through all of the metro system – even on the trains. I can text, and surf the net on my phone while everyone else is essentially in radio silence for the duration of their ride. AT&T has gotten better about their service in the actual stations – but it is still spotty.

I think many, if not most, students have Verizon. D has lived on both sides of the campus and has never had a problem with Verizon service. She also finds that having service on the Metro is a real plus.

D has had mixed experience with Verizon coverage. It is poor in her room in Letts and a few other spots. The flip side of that is that Verizon has coverage in the Metro – not all carriers do. Definitely not worth switching plans. We did look at getting a signal booster for the room but decided it wasn’t necessary.
